FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Freshman
Manuel Morales (Madrid, Spain/International College Spain) scored twice to lead the Manhattanville College men's soccer team past Farmingdale State on Tuesday night as the Valiants bested the Rams 2-1. Manhattanville climbs to 3-3-4 overall following the victory with a 3-0-2 mark in the Skyline Conference.
The rookie erased Farmingdale's 1-0 lead with goals in the 28
th and 42
nd minutes for the first multi-goal game of his collegiate career.
The host Rams got on the board first in the 24
th minute off Rafael Castro's fourth goal of the season, assisted by Anthony Bileddo and Tyree Baskin Jr. Morales fired off the equalizer a just over four minutes later before ultimately putting the Valiants ahead with 3:13 remaining in the half, his third tally of his rookie campaign.
Defensive play took charge in the closing 45, with both teams held to four total shot attempts each. The Rams would fire the only ball on target in the half, a final-minute attempt off the foot of Baskin Jr. that Valiant netminder
Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) was able to turn away from the bottom right corner of the net. The final 45 seconds ticked off following save without anymore theatrics, giving the Valiants the win in hostile territory.
Freshly appointed Skyline Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, Granados earned his third win of the year with a two save effort. The senior sports a 1.33 goals-against average as the final month of the regular season gets into full swing.
The Valiants outshot the Rams 10-7 on the night, putting five shots on target compared to Farmingdale's three.
Robert Pesantez (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) had a team-high three shots, while Morales and
Michael Mezzina (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) both finished with a pair.
