PURCHASE, N.Y. – Kicking off Atlantic East Conference play today, the Manhattanville College field hockey team was defeated by Gwynedd Mercy University, 3-1. With the loss, the Valiants fell to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The Griffins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Mackenzie Reed scored the first Gwynedd Mercy goal off a penalty corner at 9:49 in the first quarter. Laura Filchner would be awarded the assist, her first of the season.
Manhattanville would then respond with one of their own in the second quarter. At 24:45,
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) would fire off a shot on the Valiants' own penalty corner. The junior defender would tie it up, 1-1 off a dish from
Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South).
Gwynedd Mercy would take back the lead shortly after with a goal from Ashley Berry, assisted by Cheyenne Avellino. Heading into the half, the Valiants would hold advantage in shots, 5-3 and 12 penalty corners to the Griffins' three.
The Griffins would get off to a hot start to begin the third quarter, scoring their third and final goal of the game. Reed would score her second goal for the night while Avellino would tally her second assist. The Valiants would fire off three shots through the final half but would be held scoreless by Gwynedd Mercy. The Griffins' goalkeeper, Nikki Williams would make two saves to round out the defense.
Overall, Gwynedd Mercy had 15 shots with five on goal and Manhattanville had eight shots, five on goal, with two combined saves, with
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) and
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) splitting duties in cage. Morgan got the start, making one stop and surrendering all three goals prior to Harrison taking over and recording one save. The Valiants and Griffins both had 12 penalty corners throughout the contest.
The Valiants will hit the road to take on Marywood University on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. before heading back home on Sunday for their nonconference finale against Anna Maria.
