Women's Hockey Dedicates Home Opener to Memory of Abby Harris

RYE, N.Y. – A pair of power play goals by Allison Corser-James felled the Manhattanville College women's hockey team on Friday evening, dropping a 2-1 contest to the visiting Chatham Cougars. The loss drops the Valiants to 2-1-0 on the season both overall and in UCHC play.

The game was dedicated to the life and memory of Abby Harris, beloved friend and teammate of the Valiants women's hockey team who passed away last year following a battle with cancer. The teams were joined by Abby's parents George and Lourdes Harris for a heartfelt and emotional pregame puck drop. In support of the Abby Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund, the team sold raffle tickets and collected donations to provide the opportunity for young girls to play the sport that Abby loved dearly.

After a scoreless first period, Corser-James put Chatham on the board 2:29 into the second, scoring just ten seconds into the Cougars' second power play opportunity of the night. The Valiants would fire back three minutes later as Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) slotted her fourth goal of the season unassisted to tie the game up at 1-1.
It would be another costly penalty in the third that was the game's difference maker as Corser-James struck again with the extra skater at the 10:43 mark in the final period, another goal set up by the tandem of Brooke Almond and Ally Nolan.

It was a sluggish night for the Valiants' offense as the team was unable to muster the late-game magic that resulted in a pair of wins at Wilkes last weekend. Manhattanville fired 31 shots on net, including 15 in the third period alone, but were unable to get more than one past Lilly Rogers.

The Valiants had an amazing opportunity to take control of the game early in the third with the game still knotted up at 1-1. A pair of quick Cougar penalties put the Valiants on a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:07 of ice time, but Manhattanville mustered just one shot across the power plays. Manhattanville also had another chance late in the third as another Chatham penalty sent the power play unit back onto the ice with 1:23 to play. Despite the numbers advantage and another skater joining the fray with the net empty, none of the final four shots the Valiants fired on cage found their way in as the Cougars survived with the 2-1 victory.

Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) suffered her first loss of the season, stopping 12 of the 14 shots she faced.

The Valiants finished 0-for-6 on the power play with eight total shots taken. Chatham, meanwhile, finished 2-for-3, scoring twice on four shots.

Manhattanville held a narrow 29-26 advantage on the night's faceoffs, with Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) leading the effort with 15 wins on her 22 total draws. Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) and Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) added six draw wins apiece.
