Men’s Hockey Bested by Stevenson, 3-1 with a Strong Third Period Attack

STEVENSON, Md. – The Manhattanville College men's hockey team was defeated in conference action after being unable to respond to a two goal third period by the Stevenson University Mustangs. With the loss, the Valiants fell to 2-6-0 overall and 2-4-0 in UCHC play.

Manhattanville would have a dominant first period, firing off 11 shots total. Rookie forward Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School) would get the Valiants on the board with an early 1-0 lead, scoring his first collegiate goal at 14:53. Stevenson would later respond, closing out the initial 20 minutes with a goal from Liam McCanney at 19:07. The Mustangs and Valiants would be tied 1-1 going into the first intermission.

The second period would see both teams held without a scoring opportunity as Manhattanville fired off eight shots compared to Stevenson's six. The Valiants would be able to utilize the four total penalties against the Mustangs, but Stevenson would kill all four leaving it 1-1 going into the final period of regulation.

In the third period, the Mustangs would dominate offensively recording 11 shots, and scoring their second goal from Frank Vitucci at 2:41 to take a 2-1 lead. Even with plenty of time left, the Valiants would fire off ten shots but none would find the back of the net as Stevenson's goalie Ty Outen would save each on goal. The Mustangs would capitalize on their lead and make it 3-1, after Manhattanville would empty their net to try and tie it back up. Evan Beers would score the final Stevenson goal, to give the Valiants their fourth loss in a row.

Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) took the loss in net for the Valiants with a 21 save effort. The sophomore goaltender would make 12 saves combined in the first and second period, before a nine save third period.

The Valiants held the advantage on faceoffs, winning 24 draws to Stevenson's 22. Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) won a pteam-high 10 faceoffs, while Caden Eaton (Indian River, Mich./Cornwall Colts (CCHL)) totaled six. Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)) and Elijah Devereaux (Webster, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)) would add five and three, respectively.

Manhattanville went 0-for-6 on their power play chances, firing off seven shots through 16:00 of offensive advantage. The Valiants went a perfect 1-for-1 on their penalty kill, holding the Mustangs to one shot on their single power play.
