RYE, N.Y. - After nabbing a point in a shootout yesterday, the Manhattanville women's hockey team fell to No. 9-ranked Utica, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino. With the loss the Valiants now reside at 2-3-1, with the same record in UCHC play.
Utica lit the lamp first, as Hailey Modlin received a feed from Jordan Kowalski 11:54 into the first period. Manhattanville would be held scoreless as the Pioneers' defensive unit would hold the Valiants to just three shots on goal in the opening period.
Just two minutes into the second period, Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) would even the contest at one all from the stick of Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary). Modlin would net her brace and retake the lead for Utica under two minutes later, finishing off a sequence started by Emma Corbett, to pin the contest at 2-1. Attempting to capitalize on their second 5-on-3 of the game so far, the Valiants were stonewalled by the Pioneers' penalty kill unit. The unit was in full effect, allowing just two shots with the man advantage.
In the final twenty minutes of the night, Utica would net their sought-after insurance goal. The Power-play unit proved to be lethal, as Kowalski found one of her own, sounding the horn with 11:10 elapsed in the third stanza. The 3-1 score would hold as once again, the Pioneers' backline clamped down on the Valiants' attack, allowing ten shots in total and just three shots on goal in the period.
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) turned in another impressive performance, collecting 30 saves on the day. She now has totaled 185 saves on the young season, sporting a .925 save percentage. She now resides 88 saves away from becoming the new all-time leader in total saves.
The Pioneers held a 67-36 shot advantage to their counterparts, while also pacing them with shots on goal, 33-14.
It was a dead-even day in the faceoff circle, with both teams collecting 23 faceoff wins. Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) paced all Valiants with eight wins, as Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) followed suit with seven.
Manhattanville went 0-for-7 on the power play, firing just five shots. On the other half the ice, the Valiants went 7-for-8 on the penalty kill, while holding the Pioneers to only eight shots.
