RYE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville College men's hockey team collected their first win of the 2023-24 campaign on Friday night as they opened up UCHC conference play with a 5-3 result over the Knights of Arcadia at the Playland Ice Casino. With the win the Valiants now reside at 1-2-0, with a 1-0-0 record in the conference.
Five different Valiants found the back netting, with tallies coming from
Dan Barry (St. Louis, Missouri/Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)),
Elijah Devereaux (Webster, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)),
Tristan Frese (Broomfield, CO/Jersey Hitmen (NCDC)),
Artem Mateichenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/New Hampshire Avalanche (EHL)), and
Nicholas Rogers (Broad Channel, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)), with the latter four sounding the horn for the first time in the new season.
Arcadia started off the scoring with a power play goal, as Dylan Florit got the Knights on the board 12:35 into the first period after
Ryan McKenna (Spokane, Wash./Sheridan Hawks (NA3HL)) found his way into the box for tripping. The Valiants were quick to answer back, as they found themselves on a power play, scoring on the second shot with the man advantage from the stick of Devereaux to even the contest at one all.
The Knights once again would strike first in the second period, as Aaron Hamel slotted it into the net to put Arcadia back ahead. That lead would be short-lived, as the Valiants once more tied the contest when Rogers fired it home to pin the contest at 2-2. Manhattanville would grab the lead at 12:22 with Frese striking shortly after a Valiants power play, and they would not look back.
In the third period, Berry would find his second tally of the young season on a power play after Hunter Price headed to the box for charging, getting a feed from Mateichenko, and putting it away after a scrum in the crease. Arcadia would make things interesting later in the third period, as Bryce Battaglia scored when the board showed 15:34, to put the game at 4-3 in favor of the Valiants. Mateichenko would net himself an empty-net insurance tally with minutes to go in the contest, to pin the final score at 5-3 for the Valiants.
AJ Bella (Norwalk, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) finished with a team-high eleven shots, eight of those totals coming in the second and third periods.
Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School) continued his great start to his rookie campaign, adding two assists to his statistics.
All told, the Valiants led in the faceoff department, holding the 42-38 advantage. McKenna won a team high 12 draws, while
Caden Eaton (Indian River, Mich./Cornwall Colts (CCHL)) closely followed suit with eleven of his own.
Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) recorded the first win of his sophomore campaign with 19 total saves.
Manhattanville finished 2-6 on the power play, while the Knights went 1-4.
