ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's tennis team kicked off the 2023 campaign against Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday evening. The Valiants were blanked by the Spartans, 7-0, and drop to 0-3 to start the latter half of the season.
Opening up with doubles play,
Max Moeller (Crestwood, N.Y./Iona Prep) and
Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) were blanked by Ludovico Truffelli and Alberto Espinosa, 0-6, to round out the team at the No. 3 slot. The tandem of
Weston Goodwin (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) and
James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) were unsuccessful in the top flight, falling to the duo of Tobias Fuerschuss and Don Vinz Lominoque, 0-6.
Luis Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and
Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) were the only pairing to take a game, going 1-6 in No. 2 doubles against Ondrej Sranek and Ivan Laiz.
In singles, Crowley suffered a 1-6, 1-6 loss against Laiz in the No. 5 position, while
Derwin Guzman (Harlem, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) was blanked 0-6, 0-6 in the No. 6 flight against Espinosa. For No. 3 singles, Goodwin was defeated by Sramek, 0-6, 1-6 as Loganadan lost 1-6, 1-6 to Lominoque in the No. 4 position. Gonzalez took to play in the No. 2 slot, falling 1-6, 0-6 to Lennart Lehmann. Hourihan would have the strongest showing in singles play, taking the top flight position and finishing 0-6, 2-6 against Odysseas Papaioannou.
The Valiants will be back in action at their home courts on Mar. 14 at 3 p.m. to take on Juniata College.
