Baseball Swept by Neumann in Home Doubleheader

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team made their home field season debut on Saturday, dropping a doubleheader against Neumann University. With the losses, the Valiants drop to 4-4 on the year.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 3, Neumann 4 (7 Innings)
A four-run fourth led the visiting Knights to victory in the opener of Saturday's action.

A scoreless affair heading into the bottom of the third, the Valiants struck first off the bat of Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South). The sophomore came to the dish with two away before delivering a single back up the middle to plate Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) with the first run of the day.

The lead would be short lived as Neumann struck back in their next turn at bat. After limiting the Knights to a pair of hits over the first three innings, Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) would be tagged for four runs on four hits as Neumann jumped in front. Ryan Lopez scored the tying run on an Andrew Curran ground out before back-to-back doubles from Isaiah Payton and Cristian Diaz put the Knights ahead. Diaz would come around to score on a wild pitch before Brandon Colon drove hom the fourth run of the inning with an RBI single.

The Valiants put together a late rally in the final inning of the seven inning affair, scoring twice. Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) drove home Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) with an RBI single before Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) scurried home on a passed ball. Manhattanville had the tying run on second and the winning run on first, but Jonathan Baker tightroped out of danger with a fly out and a pair of ground outs to earn the complete game win for Neumann.

White fell to 1-1 on the year with the loss, going four innings and surrendering four runs on seven hits. Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) pitched great out of the pen to keep the game within reach, tossing three scoreless relief innings and striking out four while scattering three hits.

Delgado and Musantry both had two hits in the opener. Musantry legged out a triple, his first three-bagger of the season, while Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) each hit a double.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 4, Neumann 6
A ninth-inning rally by Neumann flipped the backend of Saturday's twinbill upside down as the Valiants were two outs away from earning a split.

Instead, the Knights plated three runs in their final at bats to complete the sweep. Trailing 4-3, Neumann tied the game on a Payton RBI double. Nick Glebocki and Brandon Colon would each add an RBI double as part of the inning to take the lead with what would be the winning runs.

Leading up into the ninth, the Valiants scored a run in the second and third to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) laced an RBI double down the left field line to score Kunda with the game's first run in the second. An inning later, it was Musantry with an RBI double of his own to plate McDonald.

The two run lead held until the sixth when the Knights scratched out a pair of runs to tie up the game. An error allowed Glebocki to score the first run of the inning before Shawn Vega delivered a run-scoring single.

Manhattanville retook the lead in the bottom half of the second as Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) brought Parisi home on a single to left. The 3-2 lead remained intact until the top of the eighth when Vega struck again for the Knights, hitting a solo shot to tie the game up once again.

Matica delivered another clutch RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to score Parisi once again with what was potentially the winning run before the Knights completed their ninth inning comeback.

Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) took a no decision after putting together a solid start. Making his second start of the season, the grad student tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out one. The loss fell on the shoulders of Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), who would be charged with five of the six runs. Antonelli went 3.1 innings in relief, allowing four earned runs on four hits while striking out three. Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) was called upon to try and escape the ninth with the game tied, but he would allow one inherited runner to score while being charged with a run of his own.

Parisi went 4-for-4 in the game, scoring twice and driving in a run.
