Baseball Puts 17 Runs on the Board in Win Over John Jay

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Scoring their second-highest run total of the young season, the Manhattanville College baseball team earned their first home field win of the year on Tuesday afternoon, defeating John Jay 17-5. The Valiants improve to 5-4 on the season.

Receiving no shortage of run support, Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) earned his first win of the season with a solid start on the mound. The senior surrendered just three hits over his five innings, allowing an unearned run in the first while striking out four to keep the Bloodhounds at bay.

Despite the lopsided final score, it would be John Jay taking the first lead of the day. With two gone, a Manhattanville error allowed Thomas Salerno to score with the game's first run. The Valiants responded in the bottom half with a Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) RBI single to plate Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood).

Manhattanville jumped in front in the third, scoring three runs on four hits. McDonald put the Valiants ahead with a single up the middle to score Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach). McDonald would come around to score on Joshua Gillison's (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) ground out before Frank Delagdo doubled to center to plate Clara to put Manhattanville up 4-1.

The Valiants began to run away with things in the fifth, logging four hits and capitalizing on a pair of Bloodhound errors to plate seven runs. Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) notched an RBI single before Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) scored on a passed ball to put the Valiants up 6-1. Matica would score following an error while Parisi dropped a single into left to plate Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep). A wild pitch allowed Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to score before a McDonald single brought Parisi home. One last Bloodhound error resulted in a dropped fly ball, allowing McDonald to score once again. When all was said and done, the Valiants took an 11-1 lead at the end fo the fifth.

As an encore, Manhattanville plated six more runs in the sixth on eight hits and another pair of John Jay errors. Parisi, McDonald, Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Nick Siano (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) all delivered RBIs in the frame, while Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) collected his first hit of the season to plate two more on a single.

The Bloodhounds would plate four runs, three earned, in their final turns at bat to bring the final score to 17-5.

In total, the Valiants collected 23 base hits, the most in a game this season. Four doubles from Delgado, Parisi, McDonald and CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) matched the team's high on the season. McDonald finished with a 5-for-5 day at the plate, scoring four runs and driving in three.

Sean Demo (Cape May, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) pitched a scoreless three innings in relief of Lacoparra, allowing one hit while striking out four. Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) worked the ninth for the Vals.
