WAYNE, N.J. – The Manhattanville College baseball team fell in a 13 inning marathon on Friday afternoon William Paterson, falling to the Pioneers by a final of 7-6. The loss drops the Valiants to 5-5 on the season.
Manhattanville took the lead in the top of the ninth on a
Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) RBI single that scored
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) to put the Valiants up 6-5. The Pioneers tied up the game in their final at bats on a pair of hits and two Valiant errors, sending the game to extras.
After three and a half scoreless frames of free baseball, the Pioneers walked it off in the bottom of the 13
th on Carson Weis' fourth hit of the afternoon, a bases loaded single that plated Colin Lombardo with the winning run.
The Valiants sent five pitchers to the mound in the contest.
Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) threw five innings in the start, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two.
Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) went 1.2 innings, being charged with three runs on three hits and one punchout.
Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) allowed one unearned run in his 2.1 innings, striking out two, while
Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) tossed a perfect inning in the 10
th.
TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) would be saddled with the loss, going 2-plus innings for the Vals and allowing an unearned run on four hits and four walks, punching out a pair.
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) had the most success at the dish for Manhattanville, going 3-for-6 with three runs scored. The senior was joined by
Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) as the two Valiants with extra base hits, both legged out doubles. Parisi,
Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and
Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) each successfully stole a base.
Mandel delivered the opening blow in the first, singling to center field. The ball was misplayed by William Paterson's centerfielder, allowing McDonald to score from first. The lead was shortlived as Weis tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half with an RBI single.
Mandel would be credited with his first RBI of the day in the third as his groundout allowed Parisi to score and put the Valiants back on top. The Valiants put three runs on the board in the fifth to go up 5-1. Delgado got the scoring started with an RBI double to plated Parisi.
Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) brought McDonald home with a sac fly, while
Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) lined one up the middle to score Delgado with the third run of the frame.
The Pioneers would claw their way back in over the following three innings, slowly chipping away at Manhattanville's lead. In the fifth, Dan Carter found the grass in left field to plate a run with a double. William Paterson plated another run in the sixth on Noah Cabassa's groundout that scored Steve Yelin. The comeback would be completed in the seventh as Jake Lutz laced an RBI double to left to pull the home team back within one. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Lutz would cross as the tying run on a balk to set the stage for the action in the ninth and the extra innings.
