Baseball Drops Pair of Games at Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Manhattanville College baseball team dropped a Sunday doubleheader at Montclair State to close out a four game week. The pair of losses drops the Valiants' record in the 2023 campaign to 5-7.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 4, Montclair State 22 (7 Innings)
It was a lopsided battle in the opener of the doubleheader as the Red Hawks used a 12-run third inning to jump out to a 20-0 lead en route to a 22-4 win.

The 22 runs were the most scored against the Valiants since 2014 when Misericordia plated 28 against Manhattanville.

The Valiants were limited to six hits in the loss, going hitless through the first four innings. Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) would finally get to Michael Timberlake with Manhattanville's first hit in the fifth inning, a double that scored Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.).

Jaden Colon (New Rochelle, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), Michael Medwid (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Justin Encarnacion (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) would each drive in a run as part of a three run fourth for Manhattanville.

Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) suffered the loss, going 2.2 innings in the start with 12 runs (seven earned) charged to his line on 10 hits and a pair of walks while striking out one. Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) had the most successful outing of the three Valiant relievers to take to the mound, going 2.1 innings out of the pen while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 5, Montclair State 6
While the Valiants were able to shrug off the first game's results for a stronger performance in the backend of the doubleheader, the Red Hawks pieced together a ninth inning rally to hand Manhattanville its second walk off loss of the week.

Manhattanville carried a one run lead into the final frame, but a pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases up with one away. Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) was unable to work himself out of the trouble he got himself in, walking in the tying run before Matteo Pasculli delivered the winning hit with a walk-off single.

Despite the loss, the Valiants showed strong resiliency to battle back from a 4-0 deficit in the game. Montclair State scored in three of the first four innings to build out the lead before Manhattanville had their best inning of the day in the fifth. A walk, single and hit batsman loaded the bases with nobody out for the Valiants to set the stage for their big inning. Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) reached on an error to bring home the first Valiant run in Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville), spelling an end to Jack Haveson's start. Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) plated Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) with a sacrifice fly before Deven Silva (Yonkers, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) delivered the big blow, a bases loaded double that scored three to put the Valiants ahead for the first time all day. The score held at 5-4 until the Red Hawks' ninth inning heroics.

Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) made the start for the Valiants, tossing four innings while allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out three. Sean Demo (Cape May, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) pitched masterfully in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out four in his four innings. The senior lowered his ERA on the season to 0.93 in four appearances.
