Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team was toppled by the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday night, falling to the Blue Jays by a final of 16-5. The Valiants drop to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
An 8-1 first quarter by the Blue Jays firmly put the game in control of the visitors. Evan Baden and Cam Fonseca got Saint Joseph on the board with a pair of goals assisted by Christian Decker 1:55 into the game.
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) notched the Valiants' response goal with an unassisted tally with 10:56 left in the first, but the Blue Jays would score six more times over the final 9:33 of the quarter to take a resounding 8-1 lead.
Evan Baden began the second quarter with his fourth goal of the game, once again assisted by Decker with a man advantage. Cornelia put an end to the seven-goal run by Saint Joseph with his second of the contest with 12:40 remaining in the half. Nick Pestrichello scored the next three tallies for Saint Joseph before
Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) closed out the half with the Valiants' third of the game. Berch's seventh of the season was assisted by Cornelia, moving the score to 12-3 for the Blue Jays at the half.
Scoring slowed down significantly in the second half as the Blue Jays nursed their sizeable lead. Matt Crisco and Fonseca scored for Saint Joseph in the third, sandwiching a
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) goal assisted by Cornelia. McGrath would strike again to open up the fourth quarter with his sixth goal of the year, but the Blue Jays closed out the game with goals from Baden and Pestrichello to secure the 16-5 win.
Cody Johnston (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) got the start in net for Manhattanville, playing 19:27 and making eight saves while allowing 10 goals.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) played the remaining 40:33 as he logged 11 stops while surrendering six goals.
Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) collected a team-high seven ground balls for Manhattanville, while
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) added four. Larkin and
Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) caused two turnovers apiece.
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was the most successful Valiant on the faceoffs, winning five draws.
