PURCHASE, N.Y. – On a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team was defeated by the Wentworth Institute of Technology, 20-9. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 2-5 overall on the season with conference play right around the corner.
The Leopards would have an early eight point run to start the game on the back of three goals from Logan Maklan. With 4:29 remaining in the first quarter,
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) would get the Valiants on the board off an unassisted goal. The final three and a half minutes would see another goal from Wentworth as Manhattanville would respond with three of their own.
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) would score a pair before
Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) would get one of his own to end the first quarter, 8-4.
The score would stay the same through the first 11 minutes of play in the second quarter before the Leopards would find the opportunity to score during a man advantage. Colin Ocampo, Maklan and Liam Carroll would each find the back of the net for some insurance on an 11-4 lead through only two minutes.
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and Cornelia would score back-to-back in the 6
th minute and last minute to bring the score to 11-6. With only three seconds left, the Leopards' Tyler Longo would fire it home and make it 12-6, going into halftime.
It would be a back-and-forth battle through the third quarter. Wentworth would score almost right out the gate with Drew Bouley's second goal of the day coming off a dish from Longo who would then assist in the next goal from Eric Vogt two minutes later. The Leopards would hold a 14-6 lead before McGrath would score again. Vogt would respond with another as Cornelia would get his fourth of the game, unassisted. Maklan would score number five to put the Leopards up 16-8 going into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter of the game looked similar to the second as more than 10 minutes went by before any action would be seen in the crease. Wentworth would get three goals from Bouley, Carroll, and Maklan to take a 19-8 lead with only 5:34 left in regulation.
Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) would showcase the Manhattanville resilience with an unassisted goal to bring it to 19-9 before Vogt would score with 30 seconds left to take the 20-9 win back to Boston.
Cody Johnston (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) got the start in net for Manhattanville and made one save before surrendering eight goals.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) would then come in to play the remaining 48:35 while making five saves and allowing the other 12 Wentworth goals.
For the defense,
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a team-high 11 ground balls, while
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) finished with four.
Sal DeBenedetto (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) would cause two turnovers for the Valiants as McGrath and
Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) would each cause one.
The Valiants are back at home next Saturday, April 1 as they take on Mitchell College at 1 p.m.
