PURCHASE, N.Y. – Snapping a five-game losing streak in outright dominating fashion, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team earned a 26-4 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon. The Valiants improve to 3-5 on the season.
The 26 goals is the most scored by the Valiants in close to 20 years. Manhattanville last put 26 shots in the net all the way back on April 26, 2003 against CCNY when the Valiants were members of the Knickerbocker Conference.
With no shortage of goals, the Valiants had 12 different players record a tally in the victory.
James Weinbaum (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led the effort with four goals apiece. The four scores were Weinbaum's first of the season and was the first time he had logged a goal since 2021. The grad student also dished out five assists for a nine point game. Meanwhile, it was Cornelia's sixth time this season scoring three or more times as he continues to lead the season with 32 goals and 43 total points.
Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) both notched hat tricks with three goal performances. The game would also see a number of career-firsts as
Dylan Foley (Northport, N.Y./Northport),
Anthony Mesi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville),
Nick Valdivieso (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville),
Dom Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland),
Jarod Wilmoth (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) and
Jake Strobel (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) all recorded their first collegiate goals. Foley, Mesi and Valdivieso each found the back of the net twice.
The Valiants outshot the Mariners 20-5 in the first quarter as they roared out to a 10-0 lead that set the tone for the duration of the day.
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) opened up the scoring 35 seconds off the opening faceoff, and from there the Vals were off to the races. Both Cornelia and McGrath recorded hat tricks in the opening 15 minutes with three goals apiece, while Strobel, Berch and Foley all got in on the scoring frenzy.
Niko Klopp (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) and
Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) aided the attack with assists to get into the point column.
Mitchell would finally find an answer in the second as Dylan Kinsella capitalized on a man-advantage with 2:45 gone in the period. The goal did little to stop the Valiants as the team scored six straight goals to close out the half. Weinbaum led the charge with three goals before the halftime horn sounded, joined by Cornelia, Janavey and Berch as the goal scorers of the run. Janavey and Berch would each net a man-up tally as Manhattanville took a 16-1 lead into the second half.
Manhattanville outscored Mitchell 7-1 in the third quarter. Larking and Valdivieso opened up the second half scoring before Xavier Haney got the Mariners back on the scoreboard. From there, five different goal scorers—Mesi, Foley, Berch, Valdivieso, and
Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield)—all logged tallies over the final nine minutes of the frame to expand the lead up to 23-2.
With the game already out of reach, Manhattanville added three more goals in the fourth. Weinbaum capped off his career day with his fourth goal and ninth point of the affair. Mesi and Wilmoth accounted for the final two Valiant goals while Jon Parra-Tobey and Weston Schumacher recorded fourth quarter goals for Mitchell.
The Valiants split goaltending duties amongst four different players.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made his first career start in net as he played the opening 22:04, allowing one goal and making three saves. He was spelled by
Cody Johnston (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) midway through the second quarter with the grad student making a save and allowing a goal in his 22:56 of game time.
Mike Hopkins (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) and
Elijah Bell (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) both saw seven-plus minutes of action in the fourth, combining for three saves in their season debuts.
Manhattanville dominated the ground ball battle, 56-29. Faceoff specialist
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) contributed heavily to that number as he collected 19 grounders alongside his 19 faceoff wins. Janavey finished the game with five ground balls while Wilmoth and
Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) collected four to go along with a pair of caused turnovers.
