Men's Lacrosse Notches Overtime Win at SUNY Delhi

DELHI, N.Y. – Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) scored a career-high five goals while Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) netted the overtime winner as the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team earned a second-consecutive win on Wednesday night, defeating SUNY Delhi 15-14. The Valiants improve to 4-5 on the year as non-conference play concludes.

The Valiants opened up the road contest on a 4-1 run through the first ten minutes of the quarter. Larkin netted the first of his career night, burying a feed from Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) to score a man-up goal at the 10:18 mark. King White tied the game up for the Broncos 72 seconds later before the Valiants went on a string on three unanswered goals. McGrath scored the first two of the stretch, scoring off passes from Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). Just 34 seconds after McGrath's second, Berch got into the goal column to put the Vals up 4-1 with 5:23 left in the quarter. Delhi ended the period with momentum on their side, scoring twice before intermission to cut the lead down to one.

The Broncos were the first to score in the second, tying the game on Kyle Brogan's goal just under a minute off the faceoff. Larkin took matters into his own hands to put the Valiants back in front, scoring three straight goals. Cornelia added a goal of his own before Jack McClurg closed out the half for Delhi with a goal to move the score to 8-5 in favor of Manhattanville entering the second half.

Both teams scored four goals in the third. Delhi opened the half with the first two goals to cut the Manhattanville lead down to one 2:10 into the half. The score held there for a while before Berch found the back of the net again to kickstart a 3-0 Valiant run. Palladino scored from Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) before Corenlia netted another unassisted tally to reestablish the Valiant four goal lead. Logan Bauer put an end to the Manhattanville scoring streak with 3:12 left in the quarter. McGrath appeared to have the final goal of the quarter as he was assisted by Cornelia with 23 seconds left in the period, but Bauer found paydirt seven seconds later to send the Broncos into the final 15 minutes of regulation down by three.

Delhi had their best offensive period of the night in the fourth, outscoring the Valiants 5-2 to force overtime. McClurg and Larkin traded scores to open the fourth before Delhi scored four straight to take their first lead of the game with 3:28 to play. Cornelia was able to find the crucial equalizer with 2:39 left in regulation to send the game to overtime, where McGrath would score the sudden-death victory off an assist from Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township).

Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) logged his first complete game in net as the rookie goalie played all 62:53 of play. He made a season-high 16 saves to pick up his second win of the season. He would also collect a team-high six ground balls.

Delhi dominated the shot total, 46-28. Despite the large shot discrepancy, the Valiants made the most of their offensive chances to earn the win.

Padovani won 13 faceoffs for Manhattanville while collecting five ground balls. Five different Valiants finished with a caused turnover as part of the defensive effort.
