Baseball Outslugged in Season Opener Versus Cabrini

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Seeing action for the first time in 2023, the Manhattanville College baseball team was defeated by Cabrini on Saturday in the team's first contest at The Ripken Experience, 14-6. The loss will make the Valiants 0-1 to begin their spring break trip down in Myrtle Beach.

The Cavaliers scored early, hanging four runs on the board in the first en route to a 12-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. Cabrini concluded their eight-game slate in South Carolina with the win, improving to 7-4 on the season with a 5-3 trip down to The Palmetto State.

While the Valiants were unable to erase the large hole they found themselves in through the first four innings, Manhattanville did outscore Cabrini 6-2 over the final four innings of play. The Valiants plated six runs on 10 hits in the season opener. The Cavaliers knocked 15 base hits and capitalized on four Manhattanville errors to score their 14 runs.

After being held hitless through the first five innings of the contest, the Valiants broke out for five hits in the sixth to plate their first runs of the season. With a pair of runners on to open up the frame, Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) drove a triple to center to score Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge). Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) brought home the junior Pressimone in the next at bat with an RBI single. Musantry came around to score four batters later on a Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) RBI single to score the fourth and final run of the inning, cutting into the Cabrini lead 12-4.

The Cavs got a run back in the bottom half on a Brady Campbell single. Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) plated two more runs for the Valiants in the seventh with a single to bring home the tandem of McDonald and Bornkamp once again before Cabrini's Garrett Laraia brought home the final run of the game in the eighth with an RBI single to make the score 14-6.

Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) took the loss on the mound in the season opener, surrendering seven runs (two earned) over 2.2 innings of work. Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) was the first reliever out of the pen, striking out a game-high two batters in his 1.1 innings of relief while being tagged for five runs on four hits and a pair of walks. Ryan McArdle (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) and Jay Lockwood (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) each tossed a scoreless inning, with McArdle retiring the side in a 1-2-3 fifth inning. TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) would also work an inning each in the contest.

Musantry had the best day at the plate for Manhattanville, going 3-for-5 at the dish with his RBI and a run scored. McDonald was the only other Valiant with a multi-hit game, while Bornkamp showed strong plate discipline to draw three walks. Bornkamp, Parisi and Jordan Wazolek (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) all successfully stole a base in the contest.
