PURCHASE, N.Y. – In their final non-conference matchup of the season, the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team defeated Albertus Magnus College, 20-3 on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Valiants improve to 8-3 overall on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
It was the second time this year that the Valiants netted 20 goals.
With only 75 seconds gone in the game,
Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) began what would be a career night as she put the Valiants on the board with her first of seven goals. The senior would finish with nine total points to set a new personal-best. Two minutes later,
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) would score her first of the night, unassisted, for a Manhattanville 2-0 lead. D'Angelo would fire a shot over the shoulder of Albertus Magnus' goalie for her second goal, and the Valiants' third with 9:56 left in the first quarter. After a bit of back and forth between the Falcons and Valiants,
Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) would score for a Manhattanville 4-0 lead. With three minutes remaining in the quarter, a caused turnover from Kelly would result in a D'Angelo goal to collect her sixth hat trick of the season. The Valiants would lead 5-0 going into the second quarter.
Carr would score early off a dish from D'Angelo, while Albertus Magnus' Keegan Riccio would score a free position goal to get the Falcons on the board with 13:37 remaining in the half. D'Angelo would then respond with back-to-back goals to give the Valiants an 8-1 lead. With a great offensive play and a quick cut to the goal, Kelly would score unassisted for her second goal of the night.
Brysha Schmidt (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./The Millbrook School) would then tally her first off an assist from D'Angelo followed 10 seconds later by a Carr unassisted goal for a Manhattanville 11-1 to notch her own hat trick. Kelly would then score off a free position attempt for the third hat trick on the team while D'Angelo would get another goal with 2:30 left on the clock. The Valiants would lead 13-1 against the Falcons going into halftime.
As the Valiants and Falcons returned to play, both teams would go scoreless through the first three minutes of the half before Kelly would get her fourth goal of the night for a 14-1 lead. Another seven minutes would go by as Riccio would score again for Albertus Magnus followed by a goal from Amanda McGeehan. With only 50 seconds left, Carr would respond with another goal for a 15-3 Manhattanville lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter of regulation,
Lauren Sergeant (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) would score her first collegiate goal, unassisted with 13:45 remaining. Shortly after,
MacKenzie Orf (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) would score her first goal of the season with a player advantage to taking a 17-3 lead. With less than ten minutes left, Kelly would score another and as the clock ticked down with only five minutes left, D'Angelo would tally another as well. With less than a minute, Orf would score again and get her second goal of the night and the season. The Valiants would come out victorious, 20-3.
In net,
Britney Sirota (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) would play the full 60 minutes while making three saves and only allowing three goals.
The Valiants would outshoot the Falcons 44-17 while also dominating on draw controls winning 16 to Albertus Magnus' nine.
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School), Kelly, and Carr each won four. Kelly collected a team-high five ground balls as Playle had four and ten other players grabbed at least one. Sergeant caused three turnovers to lead the Valiants, while seven other players caused at least one.
The Valiants will be back in action against Purchase College on Apr. 14 at 6 p.m. for the Battle of Anderson Hill Road.
