Lockwood Sets Single-Game Strikeout Record, Offense Scores 40 in Baseball's Sweep of Yeshiva

PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Manhattanville College baseball team put an end to a three0game losing streak in dominant fashion on Friday afternoon, plating 40 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Yeshiva. The victories improve the Valiants' overall record on the year to 12-17 while climbing back up to .500 in conference play with a 6-6 mark in the Skyline.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 18, Yeshiva 0
Jay Lockwood (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) made program history on the mound while the Valiants scored 18 runs across the final four innings to cruise to victory in the opener.

Making his first start of the year, junior hurler Lockwood went the distance with a seven inning complete game. He would strike out 15 Maccabees in the process, breaking a program record that had stood for 37 years. The previous benchmark for most punchouts in a game was 13, originally posted by Jon Abbondanza in 1986 and matched by Pat Miele in 2001. Lockwood will now sit atop the record book, needing 100 pitches to carve through the Yeshiva lineup. He would also get all of his strikeouts in six innings after not recording a punchout in the first, getting 15 of the final 18 outs by means of strikes.

With Lockwood in the process of making program history, the Valiant bats took some time to wake up with the early 11 a.m. start. Manhattanville was held to a pair of hits across the first three innings before exploding for a six run fourth. The Valiants hit four doubles in the inning, including a pair from Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) who led off the inning and would return to the dish as the team batted around. The first runs of the game came as a result of an error on Jake Parisi's (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) bunt. The attempt to gun him down sailed off course, allowing Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Clara to score. Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) lined a two run double before Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) drove in another with a two-bagger of his own. Clara drove in the sixth run of the frame with his second hit of the inning, but he would be tagged out trying to stretch a double into three.

Still, the damage was done and Manhattanville would continue to hit over the final three innings. The Valiants scored five more runs in the fifth on three hits and a pair of errors. With one run home following a throwing error, Astrologo delivered a two run single to right. Three batters later, Goohs drove in two more with a single up the middle to move the score to 11-0.

Four more hits and another error in the sixth plated four more runs. Matt Louie (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) lined an RBI single before an error allowed Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) to reach safely as Michael Medwid (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) came home. Goohs picked up his fourth and fifth RBI of the game with a two run single to right as the lead swelled to 15-0. Medwid, Louie and John Millicker (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) capped off the game with an RBI each in the seventh to push the final score to 18-0.

Goohs and Parisi had three hits each in the opener. Musantry legged out a triple, his second of the year, while the Valiants stole five bases.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 22, Yeshiva 0
As an encore performance, the Valiants scored a season-high 22 runs to complete the sweep.

17 different Valiants recorded a hit in the game, contributing to 23 total hits. Eight of the hits went for extra bases, with Bornkamp and Goohs hitting triples while Parisi hit a pair of two-baggers. Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.), Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) and Astrologo added doubles as well.

Manhattanville wasted little time in the backend as back-to-back triples from Bornkamp and Goohs allowed the Valiants to score two quick runs, aided by a throwing error. Parisi hit an RBI double before being brought home on a Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) single to give the Valiants a 4-0 lead.

After adding another run in the second on Mandel's double, the Valiants would have back-to-back two run innings in the fourth and fifth. Sacrifice flies off the bats of Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and Musantry plated the runs in the fourth, while Mandel earned an RBI an inning later on a bases loaded hit by pitch before Matica drove in another on a single to put Manhattanville up by nine.

Already nursing a sizeable lead, the Valiants blew the doors open with 13 runs over the final two innings. In the sixth, six runs came across the plate on four hits. Astrologo drove in a pair with a two run double before ultimately scoring on a wild pitch. Matica drove in another with a single before Musantry plated two more on a single to center.

An inning later, Manhattanville scored seven more runs on eight hits and a pair of Maccabee errors. Medwid and Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) hit bases loaded singles to drive in a run each before Iazzetta muscled up on a pitch down the left field line to score two more. Sean Demo (Cape May, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) found an opening on the left side of the infield to plate the 20th run of the game. A fielding error allowed Iazzetta to score before Jaden Colon (New Rochelle, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) delivered the final blow with a single to left center, chasing Demo home with the 22nd and final run.

Not to be lost in the offensive display was Jackson Branigan's (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) outing on the mound. The junior allowed just one hit, a single in the fourth, and a walk in his complete game shutout. Branigan struck out a career-high eight to earn his first win of the year.
