Baseball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader With Saint Elizabeth

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team continued its jam-packed weekend on Saturday, splitting a home doubleheader against Saint Elizabeth. The split decision moves the Valiants' overall record to 13-18 on the year.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 1, Saint Elizabeth 5
A two-run first inning proved to be enough in the opener for the visiting squad, as the Eagles limited the Valiants to just one run on seven hits to take Game One of Saturday's action.

The Eagles used a walk and three hits to plate their pair of runs in the first trips to the plate. Brad Edwards drew a one out walk before Matthew Storch hit a single and advanced on the throw attempting to get Edwards out at third, putting a pair in scoring position with one away. Drew Zimmerman drove in the lead runner on a ground out before Josh Koller dropped one in on the left field grass to plate Storch to go up 2-0.

The Valiants got one back in the bottom half after Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) hit a one out single. He came around to score a batter later as Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) drove a double to right center. Mandel would advance up to third on Marco Clara's (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) single, but the tying run remained stranded there as a fly out and popup ended the frame with just the one run.

While the Valiants' three hits in the first looked promising for success at the plate throughout the rest of the day, Brady Parks settled in as the freshman pitcher scattered just four more hits and a pair of walks over his final six innings of work. Parks went the distance in the seven inning affair, striking out one to log his first career victory.

Three walks loaded the bases for the Eagles in the third, giving Saint Elizabeth a golden opportunity to break the game open with two away. A run came across the plate on a wild pitch before Angelo Marabello cleared the rest of the bags with a two-run single to put the Eagles up 5-1. The Valiants would only get one runner past first base for the remainder of the game as Mandel hit his second double of the contest, but a pair of double plays in the sixth and seventh innings snuffed out any chance of later inning heroics for Manhattanville.

Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) would take the loss, going three innings and being tagged for all five runs. The senior gave up four hits and walked four while striking out a season-high four. Jack Taggart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) went the rest of the way for Manhattanville, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing three hits and a pair of walks while striking out three. It was the rookie's longest outing of his young career as he has now thrown seven consecutive scoreless innings.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 7, Saint Elizabeth 6
The Valiants scored in four of their six innings at the plate as the offensive came up clutch to earn the Saturday afternoon split.

As they did in the opener, the Eagles got on the board in the first as Zimmerman's two run blast over the right field wall had Saint Elizabeth in front early once again. Manhattanville responded by getting both runs back in the bottom half. A Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) single, a Mandel hit by pitch, and a stolen base by both runners had the Valiants with a pair in scoring position with two away. Gillison cashed in with a single to right to plate both runners, evening the score at 2-2.

The Valiants loaded the bases in the second off singles from Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and Bornkamp sandwiching a Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) walk. The Eagles got to the brink of escaping following a 5-2-3 double play, but Mandel salvaged the inning with a two run single to put Manhattanville in front for the first time all day, 4-2.

The Eagles pulled within one off a Jack Tone RBI single in the fourth, but the Valiants added two more runs in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and only one away, Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) hit a chopper towards first. The ball was fielded cleanly by the first baseman, but with nobody covering the bag and the ball hit too softly to make a play anywhere else, Kunda scored to reestablish the two-run advantage. Gillison hit a sac fly to deep center to plate Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) with an insurance run to go up 6-3.

Saint Elizabeth came roaring back courtesy of three hits and a pair of Valiant errors in the fifth to erase Manhattanville's lead and tie the game up at 6-6. The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth, when a Goohs single, Gillison walk and Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs. Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) stepped into the box, catching a pitch that ran inside off his elbow pad to bring in a run with a second-straight hit by pitch.

It would prove to be just enough as Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) sat down the Eagles in order in the seventh to secure the win. The rookie hurled two perfect innings out of the pen to notch the first win of his collegiate career.

Sean Demo (Cape May, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) took the no-decision in the start, going 4.1 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, three walks and six strikeouts. Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) completed the fifth inning by getting a pair of outs around a hit and an unearned run.
