Kelly Notches 100th Career Goal as Women's Lacrosse Wins Program-Record 12th Game

PURCHASE, N.Y. – In yet another history-making performance in a season full of records and milestones being made, the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team won a program-record 12th game of the season on Wednesday evening, as the Valiants knocked off Mount Saint Mary 18-6.

The win improves Manhattanville's overall record to 12-3, surpassing the 11 win seasons from 2009 and 2017 for the most in program history. With one game left to play in the regular season, the Valiants have doubled their win total from a year ago. Manhattanville has won five straight to head into the final weekend of the year, currently sitting in third place in the conference standings with a 5-2 mark in Skyline action.

Not to get lost in the history being made at a program level, the Valiants added another player to the 100 goal club in the win. A day after Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) reached the century mark, Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) scored five times to bring her career goal total up to 101. The Valiants have now had three players reach the 100 goal plateau across the last two seasons, with Lara Keenan (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) '22 reaching the mark last year.

Fresh off her milestone the day before, D'Angelo opened up the scoring with the first goal 39 seconds into the contest. She was joined by Pietra Cabral (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) on the scoresheet 35 seconds later as the Valiants built themselves a quick 2-0 lead. The Knights took charge as the period waned on, getting three straight goals our of the sticks of Erica Schmidgall, Kate Crooker and Karli Ferrucci to go up 3-2 with 6:36 left in the opening period. The Valiants responded with three straight of their own as D'Angelo added her second before Cabral picked up a first quarter hat trick with 2:05 to play. Schmidgall struck against for Mount Saint Mary to close out the high-scoring first period with the Valiants holding on to a 5-4 lead.

Manhattanville took control in the second, outscoring the Knights 7-1 over the ensuing 15 minutes. The Valiants went on a 5-0 run over the first 9:46 as D'Angelo scored three times along with goals from Cabral and Kelly's first of the game. All would be unassisted minus D'Angelo's first of the run, which came courtesy of Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial). Crooker stopped the run with an unassisted tally with 1:58 left in the half, but the Valiants got goals from Kaci Pierce (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Kelly in the final 21 seconds to carry a resounding 12-5 lead into half.

The attack continued well into the second half as the Valiants outscored Mount Saint Mary 6-1 over the final 30 minutes of play. In the third, Pierce and Kelly traded goals as the duo each scored twice to extend the lead up to 11. Pierce's first of the period came from Lauren Sergeant (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) at the 11:03 mark before Kelly notched her third of the game from Cabral at 8:00. A minute later, Pierce added an unassisted tally for her third of the contest. Then, with 5:41 left in the period, Kelly would net goal No. 100 of her career, reaching yet another milestone as the Valiants took a 16-5 lead into the final quarter.

Scoring slowed down tremendously in the fourth, but the Valiants got a woman-up goal from Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) via D'Angelo with 11:09 to play before Kelly closed out her night with a shorthanded tally for her fifth score of the game. The Knights would break a close to 30 minute scoring drought as Maia Dienos scored Mount Saint Mary's lone second half goal with 2:48 remaining in the game.

Britney Sirota (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) finished with nine saves in the contest to pick up her 12th win of the year, also setting a new program single-season benchmark in the process. The senior netminder has been stealer this season as she lowers her goals-against average to 7.93 with a .526 save percentage.

Sirota also led the way with eight ground balls as the Valiants collected 25 as a team. Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) finished with five to go along with a team-high 13 draw controls. Kelly caused three turnovers to lead the team while collecting four draw controls.
