Baseball's Comeback Efforts Fall Short in Doubleheader Sweep at Hands of Saint Joseph's Long Island

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team fought hard against one of the top teams in the Skyline Conference, erasing four deficits over the course of Saturday's doubleheader against Saint Joseph's Long Island, but the Valiants ultimately fell short in both contests. The pair of losses drops the Valiants to 9-12 overall and 3-3 in Skyline play.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 6, Saint Joseph's 7 (10 Innings)
The Valiants came back after trailing three separate times in the opener to ultimately force extra innings, but Saint Joseph's was able to score in the tenth to earn the win.

A Paul Gugliuzzo RBI single scored Nick Vicino with his third run of the affair as Doug Morabito worked around a leadoff Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) double in the bottom half of the frame to earn the save for Saint Joseph's.

The Golden Eagles took an early lead off a first inning James Maggio sacrifice fly to score Phil Krpata. The Valiants got even with a sac fly of their own in the third as Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) skied a ball to center to bring Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) home with the tying run.

Saint Joseph's would go back in front in the fourth as they scored four runs on five hits and a Manhattanville error. A single, hit by pitch, and fielding error had the bases loaded for the Golden Eagles with nobody retired. Three straight singles off the bats of Vicino, Mike Badala and Krpata brought home the four runs as the Golden Eagles went up 5-1.

The Valiants fought back once again, scoring four runs on four hits in the sixth. Much like the Golden Eagles' big inning, Manhattanville got their started with the bases loaded as Joshua Gilison, Parisi and Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) all hit singles to open up the frame. A wild pitch allowed Gillison to score before Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) drove a double to left center to clear the bases. Jordan Wazolek (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) replaced Clara as a pinch runner, advancing on a ground out and scoring on a Bornkamp sac fly to center to tie the game up 5-5.

The Golden Eagles took their third lead in the eighth as Vicino scored on a wild pitch. The Valiants trailed 6-5 entering the ninth, with Bornkamp opening the inning with a hit by pitch. A sac bunt and infield single brought the tying run to third with one away. The Golden Eagles got the ground ball they needed for a potential game-ending double play, but Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) booked it out of the box to beat the throw to first as Bornkamp scored the tying run. After Musantry stole second, Gillison hit a sharp grounder to short that was mishandled. Musantry took a sharp turn around third as the ball was recovered, getting caught in a rundown. The senior broke for home, diving in to the plate as the tag was applied by pitcher Jack Kelly covering to keep the game-winning run from scoring and sending the contest to extras where Saint Joseph's would win in 10.

Kelly earned the win with three innings out of the pen for the Golden Eagles, allowing one run on a hit and a walk. Sean Demo (Cape May, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) was saddled with the loss for Manhattanville as he pitched the 10th and allowed a run on a pair of hits. Alby Ciuffetelli (Mahopac, N.Y./Yorktown) made the start for the Valiants, throwing six innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on 11 hits while striking out three. Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) threw three relief innings, allowing a run on three hits with a strikeout.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 4, Saint Joseph's 8
With the opener going to extras, the doubleheader script was flipped as the backend was played as a seven inning contest. The Valiants erased another early Golden Eagle lead, but Saint Joseph's scored in each of the final four innings to complete the sweep on Saturday.

Saint Joseph's got on the board in the second on a Vicino sac fly that scored Ryan Decoursey. The equalizer for the Valiants came across in the bottom half as Gillison was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.

A Jake Giannico RBI triple put the Golden Eagles ahead in the fourth before hanging three runs on four hits and an error an inning later to take a 5-1 lead halfway through five. Another run came home in the sixth on a groundout, putting the Valiants down five with six outs to work with. Manhattanville had another comeback effort in them as a leadoff double from Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and a single from Parisi put runners on the corners with nobody away. Matica cracked a double into the left center gap to score both base runners while the Valiant catcher scored after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to make it a two run game entering the final inning.

The comeback would end there, however, as Saint Joseph's got two runs back in the top of the seventh while the Valiants were unable to do anything else at the dish following a leadoff single from Mandel, falling by a final of 8-4.

Anthony Cinquemani improved to 6-0 on the year with his four innings, holding the Valiants to one run on three hits. Morabito notched a second save on the day with three relief innings, charged with the three runs in the sixth while allowing four total hits.

For the Valiants, Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) took the loss as he went four innings in the start. The sophomore allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks, striking out one. Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) allowed three runs, two earned, over his two innings, while Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) and John Millicker (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) combined for a scoreless seventh inning.
