PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw in Friday's season-opening matchup at the Stevens Institute of Technology. The nil-nil decision will get the Valiants off to an 0-0-1 start to the year.
The Valiants were limited to just four total shots in the game, two in each half, with on two shots going on net over the course of the night.
The Ducks had an easier time firing shots with ten total attempts on the day, but only three were able to be on target. Senior netminder
Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) was up to task, successfully turning away all three shots on net to end the game with a clean sheet to begin the year.
Despite the final shot total discrepancy, the Valiants were credited with the first shot on goal on the night. With 25 minutes gone,
Demba Cham (Bronx, NY/World View High School) fired a shot to the lower left corner of the net. The junior's shot was successfully turned away by Duck netminder Justin Cross to hold the game scoreless. Granados would also deny the only shot on net he saw across the opening 45 minutes.
The Valiants would get their final scoring chance in the 73
rd minute, once again off the foot of Cham. The midfielder's shot was swallowed up by Cross as the final 17 minutes and change would expire with the only closing action being Granados' third save at the 79
th minute.
Cham finished with three of Manhattanville's four total shot attempts, while
Matt Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) fired off the fourth.
Stevens held the corner kick advantage, 5-1. The Valiants were assessed 13 fouls compared to the nine charged to the Ducks.
