Men's Soccer Bested By No. 12 Amherst

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Playing their final of three ranked opponents to open up the year, the Manhattanville College men's soccer team fell to No. 12 Amherst 3-0 under the lights of GoValiants.com Field on Wednesday night. The Valiants drop to 0-2-2 on the year with the loss.

The Mammoths scored all three goals in the first half while outshooting the Valiants 19-9 over the duration of the night. The opening blow came at the nine minute mark courtesy of Simon Kalinauskas who knocked in a feed from Declan Sung past Valiant netminder Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis). Granados, who made his collegiate debut two years ago against Amherst, finished the night with four total saves.

Mohammed Nuhu doubled the advantage in the 22nd minute before the Mammoths staked claim to the 3-0 lead with 3:27 remaining in the half off a frenzied play in the box. A series of quick passes from Ada Okorogheye and Ioannis Hadjiyiannis made their way to the foot of Riley Priddy who was able to deposit the ball into the back of the net, closing out a dominant half for the Mammoths in which they fired 14 total shots.

The Valiants were able to keep pace with Amherst in the second half, matching the visitors' shot total of five across the final 45 minutes. Three shot attempts were on target, but Max Landa successfully stopped them all to preserve a clean sheet for Amherst. The goalie split time with Juan Perez, who drew the start and played the first half, making a pair of stops.

Manhattanville's nine shots were led by two from Arjan Delija (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington), playing 64 minutes off the bench. The sophomore logged one shot on net, joining Michael Mezzina (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic), Manuel Morales (Madrid, Spain/International College Spain), Nico Del Vescovo (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive), and Trevor Henderson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) with a shot on target.

Amherst took nine corner kicks compared to Manhattanville's six. The Mammoths were also assessed 20 fouls versus the eight whistled on the Valiants.
