Women's Soccer Off to Best Season Start Since 2009 With 2-1 Win Over Kean

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A pair of late first-half goals led the Manhattanville College women's soccer team past Kean University on Wednesday evening by a 2-1 final. The Valiants improve to 3-1 on the year, their best start to a year since 2009.

The Cougars struck first in the 27th minute as Kean looked to replicate their 4-0 win over the Valiants a season ago. Carly Gleason finished off a touch from Sonya Brewer to put the visiting team up 1-0. Manhattanville, however, was able to put the thoughts of last year's contest to bed as they held firm, holding the Cougars to just two more shots on net for the remainder of the contest.

With the defense tightening up and limiting Kean's possession opportunities, the Valiants found the equalizer with four minutes left in the half. Nadia Parisi (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) received a pass from Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) on the near sideline. The sophomore elevated the shot just over a leaping Abigail Wing in the Cougar net to score her first tally of the season and tying the game up 1-1.

Capitalizing on the momentum, the Valiants struck again with 1:15 left on the clock, this time with Castaneda burying a shot via Jenna Moraglia (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford). Castaneda continues to thrive in her first season with the Valiants, as the junior transfer leads the team with three goals and eight total points across the opening four games.

With the advantage at the half, the Valiants successfully shut down Kean for the final 45 minutes to secure the win. While the Cougars outshot Manhattanville 6-3 over the second half, just two of their shots went on net with Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) successfully stopping both shots. The sophomore goalie improved to 3-1 in net with a 1.32 goals-against average on the year and an 0.821 save percentage.

Parisi and Castaneda led the team with three shots apiece, a total matched by Kailey Roxo (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) who provided 22 minutes off the bench.

The Valiants earned six corner kicks compared to two by Kean.
