PURCHASE, N.Y. - In the rain-soaked conditions, The Manhattanville College men's soccer team emerged victorious in the Battle of Anderson Hill Road, 4-2, on GoValiants.com Field on Saturday afternoon. With this result, the Valiants notched their first win of the season, pushing their record to 1-3-3.
After struggling offensively to start the season, the Valiants kicked down the door for the most goals since October 2022, when Manhattanville netted eight against Maritime.
Trevor Henderson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) started off the Valiants scoring with a free kick goal from the left side of the 18-yard box, keeping the ball on the turf and beating the goalkeeper on the far post.
Just five minutes of play later,
Joseph Kresse (Goshen, NY/Goshen High School) served in an in-swinging corner kick that no player in the box could get a touch on, falling to the right foot of
Keanu Stingone (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who buried it home into the top netting for his first colligate goal.
Ermin Mackic pushed the score to 2-1 after a free kick goal of his own, from the right corner of the 18-yard box curling it and kissing the post to find the back of the net.
Henderson secured his brace in the 36th minute after
Sebastian Testa (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Jack Gjokaj, as Gjokaj rushed out and pushed the save right to Henderson, who slotted it home into the open net, putting the score at 3-1 as the halftime whistle blew.
Matt Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) netted his first goal of the season shortly after the break, as
Michael Mezzina (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) fed him a ball from inside the box to a waiting Rabadi who powered it home into the top corner. Oliver Broun would net a consolation goal for the Panthers as he scored nine minutes later after Mackic played a cross to Broun who was camped on the back post.
All told, Purchase outshot the Valiants 23-20, with Manhattanville leading the way with 12 shots on goal.
Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) totaled eight saves in the contest in the 90 minutes of rain.
The Panthers led in corner kicks 9-5. Henderson and Testa led the Valiants in shots both with four, followed by Arijan Delija and
Vinny Garcia (Memphis, TN/Lausanne Collegiate School), with three and two, respectively.
