THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – A dominant Valiant attack effort featuring 23 shots and five different goal scorers resulted in a 5-1 victory for the Manhattanville College men's soccer team at SUNY Maritime on Wednesday night. The victory improves the Valiants' record to 2-3-3 on the season and 2-0-1 in Skyline Conference play.
The Valiants fired double-digit shots in both halves as the previously goal-starved team has now scored nine times in the last two games. A pair of goals in the first half followed by three more tallies in the closing 45 minutes put Manhattanville in the driver's seat for the contest.
In the 12
th minute, the Valiants opened up their scoring barrage as
Nico Del Vescovo (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) received a cross from
Matt Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and was able to chip the ball over Maritime's goalkeeper Augusto Lebron. The score held steady at 1-0 before Manhattanville's sustained pressure was able to break through again with 2:05 left in the half as
Cole Weiner (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) was able to tap in
Myles Sawyer's (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) pass off his left cleat into the net to double the Valiant advantage.
Both first half scores were Del Vescovo and Weiner's first of the year.
After firing 11 shots in the first half, the Valiants didn't step off the gas pedal in the second with 12 more shots yielding three more goals. In the 68
th minute,
Manuel Morales (Madrid, Spain/International College Spain) notched his first of the year via Rabadi, firing a turnaround shot from the middle of the box. Two minutes later,
Arjan Delija (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) got into the scoring column for the first time in his sophomore campaign to put the Vals ahead 4-0.
Sebastian Testa (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) then capped off the scoring frenzy in the 77
th minute as Delija assisted the senior's second of the year.
With no shortage of goal support,
Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) improved to 2-2-3 on the year in net. The senior's lone blemish of the night came in the 78
th minute as Chris Vazquez was able to breakup the shutout bid off a shot from Jack Burkhardt. Granados finished with four saves as his goals against average dipped to 1.57 on the season.
In all, 13 different Valiants recorded a shot in the victory. Weiner led the effort with four total shots, while
Michael Mezzina's (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) two shots on goal were the most by any Valiant.
The Valiants took five corner kicks compared to two by the Privateers.
