CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team concluded their non-conference schedule on Tuesday night as the Valiants were bested by SUNY Cortland by a final of 3-1. Manhattanville drops to 3-9-1 overall with the loss.
The Valiants struggled to generate many chances against an extremely aggressive Red Dragon team as Cortland outshot Manhattanville 46-12 in the contest.
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) stood on her head in the Valiant crease to keep Manhattanville in the game, including stopping all 14 shots she faced in the first period.
Cortland's constant pressure broke through in the second period with goals from Ainsley Delacourt and Meggan Cramer. Gerardi logged 17 more stops in the frame as on the other side of the ice the Valiants were limited to just two shots on net.
The Valiants would get their best looks in the third as the team was able to put seven pucks on net.
Lindsay Reyes (Chino Hills, Calif./SUNY Cortland) put Manhattanville on the board at 13:29 in the period with her first of the season against the team that she had previously played three seasons for.
Despite generating more opportunities in the third period than in the previous two combined, the Valiant offense was held in check the rest of the way as Maggie Dickinson finished with 11 saves on 12 shots. The Red Dragons added an insurance tally at 16:03 off the stick of Molly McCabe.
Gerardi finished with 43 total saves, her third straight game with 40 or more saves. The graduate goaltender holds a 2.89 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage entering the upcoming gauntlet of conference contests that will determine Manhattanville's postseason fate.
Reyes,
Harper Weisbeck (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) and
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) were the only Valiants to record multiple shots in the game, each finishing with two apiece. Niedermier was also Manhattanville's faceoff leader on the night with eight wins as the Red Dragons held a 28-15 advantage at the circles.
The Valiant power play was held silent in its two chances, logging just one shot with the extra skated. Cortland went 1-for-5 on their power plays with 12 total, scoring on their last advantage of the night to reestablish the two goal advantage.
