PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville women's tennis team took to the courts this afternoon, facing off against Saint Joseph's University Long Island for the first time since the two met in the Skyline Championship Finals a year ago. With their regular season nearing the end of the tunnel, the Valiants remain undefeated in conference play, defeating SJLI, 6-1. Manhattanville now stands at 6-0 in conference play and 11-1 overall.
The Valiants aquired the first point of the match with three doubles victories. The third court finished first for Manhattanville with a 6-0 win from Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon). The pair pegged down their opponents, Rose Ruopoli and Amalia Augustin to secure the first win of the match for the Valiants. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) finished next on the No. 2 flight defeating Golden Eagles Madi Beatty and Amanda Andree, 6-2. The second and final flight of doubles was taken by Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services), 6-3. The dynamic duo defeated Morgan Wind and Allison Goodyear finishing off doubles 3-0.
Gutierrez led the charge for the Valiants finishing in straight games and sets to win the first match of singles play against Amalia Agustine 6-0, 6-0. Filippelli finished next on the No. 3 flight winning 6-1, 6-1 against Augustin. This now puts the Valiants at 3-0 in the match overall with more singles matches to go. Doyle finished next on the court she was no stranger to winning 6-0, 6-0 on the number one court. She defeated Golden Eagles junior, Wind. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished next for the Valiants duking it out with Amanda Andree ultimately winning 6-0, 6-3. Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) found herself back on the courts in the No. 6 position. Grant was the only Valiant to drop a match leading to SJLI one and only point. Ruopoli won 7-6, 6-0. The match now stands at 5-1 with one singles game still standing. The only three set match of the day was pioleted by Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) on the No.2 court against Goodyear. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) won 6-4 the first set and tool a toll in the second losing 6-1. With a tiebreaker in motion, Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) came out on top winning 10-3.
With this win, the Valiants are now 6-0 in the conference with one more conference matchup to play. Manhattanville takes on Farmingdale State College next Saturday, October 26, with the winner securing the top seed for the Skyline Championship Tournament.
