Tennis Serves Their Way to Become Regular Season Champs

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University Women's Tennis team completed their regular season this afternoon as champions. Battling it out with the Rams of Farmingdale State College the Valiants topped their season off with a perfect 6-0 record. With both teams sitting at 5-0 leading into today's match, only one would come out undefeated. Manhattanville defeated Farmingdale 4-3 in the closest match they've had all season long.

Starting the day off with doubles the Valiants were able to get the one point secured. Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) finished first on the No. 3 court, losing to Mackenzie Gisler and Mikayla DeMaria 6-1. Our No. 1 squad of Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) who has been showing up and showing out all year, defeated Natalia Furchel and Amanda Jones 6-3. With the score at 1-1, it was up to the dynamic duo to determine who would earn the first point of the overall match. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) defeated Lien Collins and Gabby Loria on the No. 2 flight, 6-4.

The Valiants continued to push as Filippelli continued the win cycle defeating Jones, 6-3, 6-1. Manhattanville hit a minor bump, losing the next two matches tying the score 2-2. King dropped to Loria 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 5 court and Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) fell to Collins 6-3, 6-1 on the No. 1 flight. With three matches remaining and the score tied up, it was still anyone's game. Gutierrez and Doyle were next to finish, and they were able to bring back the winning momentum as Gutierrez defeated DeMaria in a three-set match and Doyle defeated Furchel. Doyle won 6-2, 7-5 while Gutierrez took a more extensive route, being the only three set match of the day. She took the first set 6-2 and dropped the second 6-0. With a third and final tiebreaker needed, Gutierrez was able to push forward for the win going 6-4 to finish off. With these wins the Valiants stood victorious 4-2. The final match on court four finished as well where Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) fell to Gisler 6-2, 7-6. Regardless, Manhattanville remains undefeated earning themselves the regular season champion's title.
