PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University women's tennis team took to the courts this afternoon for their Skyline Conference Championship semifinal match. The undefeated regular season champs, No. 1 Manhattanville, faced off against No. 4 Yeshiva University for a spot in the Championship match this coming Saturday. The Valiants were able to secure a spot for themselves in the Championship round with this 4-0 victory.
Heading into doubles, you'll notice no lineup changes from the regular season. The matches finished in order, one, two, three. Finishing on the No. 1 court first like they have been all conference matchups, Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) controlled the match defeating Shira Adler and Gabrielle Resnick, 6-1. Next up across the finish line was dynamic duo Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services). The pair defeated Sarah Leiderman and Anna Laufer, 6-2. With these two completed matches won, the third and final flight of Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) winning, remained unfinished at 5-3.
Only four points are needed to seal the deal on winning and heading to the championship match. Manhattanville only needed three more points while Yeshiva would need to win four matches before our three. The Valiants continued to persevere with the top three courts finishing first. Doyle set up shop on the second court, commanding each game and set. She defeated Micka Mimoun, 6-0, 6-0. Just a few feet away on court No. 1 was Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) who finished with similar numbers in a dominating match herself, winning over Adler 6-1, 6-1. With the score standing at 3-0, Manhattanville needed just one more win to secure their ticket to the championship. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) was the securing match for the Valiants over on the No. 3 flight. Matching the same numbers as her sister just moments before, Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) conquered Sarah Leiderman, 6-1, 6-1.
The final three flights were nearing the end before the match concluded. Filippelli stood strong on court No. 4 at 6-0, 5-2 against Laufer. Just under her, Gutierrez remained at 6-3, 4-2 on court No. 5 competing against Sarah Grunseid. King was set up on court No. 6 falling to Resnick 6-3, 4-1.
