PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University women's tennis team saw their season come to an end this Saturday afternoon against Farmingdale State College. Farmingdale prevailed over the Valiants winning 4-2 in the Skyline Conference Championship Finals to finish their 2024 campaign 12-5 overall. Manhattanville finished their season 12-2 in an unforgettable year.
Farmingdale earned themselves the first point of the match, winning two of the three doubles contests. Going down in order, Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) dropped 6-1 to Natalia Furchel and Amanda Jones. Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) brought back the Valiants energy defeating Lien Collings and Gabriella Loria. With the score tied 1-1, it was up to the third court to decide which team earns the point. Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) fought hard and long, falling 7-5 to Mackenzie Gisler and Mikayla DeMaria. With the decision, the Rams secured the first point of the match.
Heading into singles play, Farmingdale needed only three points to win while the Valiants needed all four points to win. Gutierrez resided on flight No. 5 where she lost to Lorai 6-0, 6-2. Doyle battled back for Manhattanville to win 6-0, 6-0 against Furchel, earning the first point for the Valiants. Graduate captain King dropped to DeMaria 6-2, 6-2. With this loss, the Valiants now stood at an overall score of 3-1. Flights one, three and four were still in action to keep the momentum going. Filippelli had a fired-up crowd in her corner in a three-set thriller against Gisler. Filippelli dropped the first set 6-4. She came back to win the second 6-4 and the third 6-1. With this win, the score now stood at 3-2. Only two courts remained on the Manhattanville Tennis Courts. The twins, Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) battled it out back-to-back. Both matches were taken to three sets. Addison-Merces Ortiz was the first to finish of the pair ultimately deciding the outcome of this contest. On the No. 3 flight, Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) dropped the first set 6-0 to Amanda Jones. She came back to win the second 6-3. Jones took the third set 7-5 giving Farmingdale their fourth and final point to win the Skyline Conference championship. The No. 1 court of Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Lien Collings remained unfinished with the first set going to Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services), 6-2 and the second going to Collings, 7-5. The third set was underway with Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) up 3-0, but it did not need to be completed as the match on court No. 4 finished first.
The Rams will represent the Skyline Conference in the NCAA Tournament this spring.
