MADISON, N.J. - The Manhattanville University women's tennis team competed in their first spring match of the season. The Valiants traveled to Drew University where they suffered a 5-2 loss. Manhattanville has three more matches to compete in for the remainder of the season.
The Valiants suffered a 1-0 loss through the double's competition. Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) played on the No. 1 court where the duo faced a demanding defeat to Mary Kalorin and Sophie Weaver, 6-0. Over on the No. 2 flight, Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) earned three games for themselves before ultimately falling to Riley Roesel and Natalia Zamora 6-3. The final pairing on the third court was taken over by Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon). The pair fell short competing against Elise Parisi and Jada Worthem, 6-1.
Heading into singles play, the Valiants were down 1-0 in the overall match. Doyle took residency on the first flight where she was pegged down by Kalorin 6-2, 6-1. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) notched a much closer match competing against Weaver. She lost the first 7-5 and the second 7-6 from a 6-3 tiebreaker. The score was now 3-0 with three singles matches remaining. The No. 3 and No. 4 courts took over, bringing the Valiants only two points in the match. Filippelli earned the first point for Manhattanville residing on court No. 3 taking the match to three sets. She dropped the first set 7-5 and came back to win the second set 6-4. She persevered past Zamora in the third and final set 6-4, to win. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) competed on court No. 4 defeating Roesel in a close first set battle, 7-5, and a clear-cut final set 6-2. The score now stood at 3-2. Two final courts remained as Gutierrez took place on court No. 5 where she dropped to Danielle Pettoni 6-1, 6-2. King took place on flight No. 6 where she came up short to Parisi 6-2, 6-1.
The Valiants closed out their match against Drew, 5-2.
