Men's Soccer Holds Off Mount Saint Mary, 4-2

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – A three-goal first half set the tone for the Manhattanville University men's soccer team on Tuesday night as the Valiants defeated Mount Saint Mary in a road matchup by a 4-2 final. The Valiants improve to 9-6-1 overall with the win and hold firm in second place in the Skyline Conference standings with an 8-1-0 record with two games left to go in the regular season.

Leo Marsella's (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) first career goal played the biggest role of the night, as the sophomore's tally went on to be the eventual game-winner. Marsella struck with just four seconds remaining in the opening half, putting the Valiants up 3-1 heading into the break with a lead the team would hold the rest of the way.

Setting the stage for Marsella's strike, Manhattanville scored twice in a 2:34 span starting in the 23rd minute. Johnny Antolino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) got the scoreboard working with his second goal of the season before the Valiants' leading scorer on the year Mason Chetti (Ronkonoma, N.Y./Connetquot) delivered his seventh tally of the year in the 25th minute, putting Manhattanville up 2-0 on hostile ground. The score held steady until the 34th minute when the Knights got on the board on Sam Bevevino's second goal of the year from Carson Macur to slice the deficit in half.

Marsella's goal loomed large as the Knights struck again in the 73rd minute with Marco Mazzarelli netting his eighth of the season. Mount Saint Mary was unable to fully close the gap as Chetti put the game on ice with his second of the night in the 87th minute off an assist from Keanu Stingone (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).

Manhattanville outshot Mount Saint Mary 16-9 with the Valiants holding a 13-6 shot on goal advantage. The majority of the chances unsurprisingly came via Chetti, as the graduate forward fired five balls on cage in his 75 minutes of play. Stingone, Antolino and Demba Cham (Bronx, NY/World View High School) each recorded a pair of shots for Manhattanville.

Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) picked up his ninth win of the season, making four saves in the effort. The victory was the 38th of his collegiate career, now the most in program history. The graduate goalkeeper sports a 1.68 goals against average on the year following Tuesday's result.
