PURCHASE, N.Y. - Making the short trip down the street, the Manhattanville University men's soccer team defeated cross-town rival Purchase, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Valiants now sit at 11-6-1 overall, and a 9-1 conference record and locking up the second seed in the Skyline Conference Championship tournament.
The stat sheet tells the story of the contest, as Manhattanville outshot the Panthers 22-5 on the day while also pacing them 10-2 in shots on goal. Similar to the shots category, the Valiants led in corner kicks 6-3.
Manhattanville's offensive output was fronted by frontman Tiernan McLaughlin (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep), who netting himself a brace in the first half, both tallies being assisted by Demba Cham (Bronx, NY/World View High School) on crosses. The Valiants broke through after having their first four shots turned away by the Panthers netminder, as Cham whipped a cross in from the wing with McLaughlin getting it done with his head to the top right of the net. The duo would strike again in the 35th minute, this time from a Cham cross on the ground from the right wing, having McLaughlin one-time the pass to the back of the net, for a 2-0 lead as the halftime whistle blew.
More of the same unfolded in the second stanza, with Manhattanville netting another marker in the 70th minute, with substitute Nico Del Vescovo (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) one-timing a cross from Lucas Fernandez (Stamford, Conn./Stamford), settling the score at 3-0 as the clock hit triple zeros.
Jake Rothluebbers (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union High School) spent all ninety minutes in net, as the senior tallied two saves during the contest.
