Field Hockey Comes Up Short Against King's

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Playing the finale of a three-game home stretch, the Manhattanville University field hockey team fell in a 1-0 contest against visiting King's College on Saturday. The loss snaps the Valiants' two-game win streak, dropping to 3-7 in 2024.

The difference maker in the low-scoring affair came in the 11th minute as King's was awarded a penalty stroke opportunity. Davina Krappa capitalized on the 1-on-1 chance for the Monarchs, beating a sprawling Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) to put King's on the board.

It proved to be the only work the scoreboard would get on the day as the 1-0 score held for the following 49 minutes and change. The Monarchs fired four shots in the opening half, all coming in the first quarter, while the Valiants logged a shot in each of the first two periods, neither of which went on target. Makenzie Mueller (Northport, N.Y./Northport Senior) put a ball wide in the opening minute of play in the first, while Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) accounted for Manhattanville's lone shot in the second.

The pace picked up in the second half, with both teams generating eight shots across the closing 30 minutes. The Monarchs outshot the Valiants 5-3 in the third before Manhattanville flipped the shot advantage in the fourth. Both offenses began firing in the fourth quarter, combining for seven total shots on goal. The Valiants were relentless in their quest to find the equalizer, but all four of their shots on net in the quarter were successfully turned away by Emily Bollinger, who earned the shutout victory for the Monarchs with a five-save afternoon.

Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had the most chances on her stick on the day, finishing with three shots on goal. Monahan and Taylor Benedetto (East Yaphank, N.Y./William Floyd) accounted for the Valiants' other shot attempts that went on the cage, with Monahan also ending the day with three total shots.

Doherty finished with four saves, the penalty stroke goal being the lone blemish on her docket. The sophomore hold a 1.64 goals against average on the year with a 2-3 record.

Manhattanville held an 11-9 advantage on penalty corners.
