WEST HARTFORD, CT. - The Manhattanville University field hockey team took to the field this afternoon against the University Saint Joseph. Coming back from being down most of the game, the Valiants were still unable to come back with a win. With this loss, they now stand at 3-8 on the season with conference play still to come. Â Â
Despite the Valiants being outshot by Saint Joseph 6-1 in the first quarter, the contest remained scoreless for the first 15-minute period. The two penalty corners recorded were taken by the Bluejays while Manhattanville had none. Â
The first tally of the game came early in the second quarter from Saint Joseph just a minute into the second quarter. The ball was dribbled quickly down into Manhattanville's defensive half and just a few short passes later, Aurelia Barker put the ball in the back of the cage. Her goal was assisted by Eryn Ross, making it her fifth goal of the season. The Bluejays had two more shots on goal for the quarter, but Sophomore Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) saved both keeping the score at 1-0 at the half. Â
Setting the pace in the third quarter from the start, Saint Joseph scored again just thirty seconds in. Maya Tomko scored, making it her sixth of the season. The goal came from teammate Grace Kociszewski. The Valiants were able to put two more shots up for themselves in the third quarter before leading into the final 15 minutes of the game.Â
Manhattanville found themselves more in the Bluejays defensive half than they have all game. Putting up four more shots in the last quarter and netting one. Eleven minutes in came a penalty corner opportunity where Julia Huertas (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) inserted the ball into play. Huertas found herself with an opportunity to score but it was saved by Bluejays goalie Jaci Felix-Hull. A few seconds later, Sabina Cosmo (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) was able to put the ball in the back of the net despite the scuffle from Huertas' rebounded shot. The score now stood at 2-1 with under three minutes remaining. Â
The Valiants totaled eight shots compared to the Bluejays' seventeen. Of those shots, seven of Manhattanville's were shots on goal while only nine of Saint Joseph's seventeen were on target. Â
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) led the team in shots with two while teammates six other Valiants were able to get one shot off throughout the contest. Â
Both teams also recorded one yellow card through the 90-minute game.Â
