PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University women's tennis team commanded the courts defeating Pratt Institute alongside the men's team this afternoon. The Valiants extinguished Pratt in a clean sweep, winning all three doubles matches and all six singles matches. For the first time this season they completely dominated the entire match, 7-0.
With an action-packed afternoon for several Valiants, women's tennis governed doubles play, winning all three matches. On the No. 3 court, we saw a new pair that we haven't yet seen all season. Graduate student Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) took her usual spot but this time alongside freshman, Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon). The duo excelled as they defeated Alice Li and Victoria Hatala 6-0. Dynamic duo, Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished second to be in par with their teammates also completing a 6-0 win. Over on flight one, Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) almost completed the 6-0 trend of the doubles tour ultimately winning 6-1 to earn their first point.
Filippelli was the first of the bunch to complete her match defeating Julia Ognibene. Filippelli seized control of the match, defeating Ognibene 6-0, 6-0. The next to finish was Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) on court No. 1 who considerably had the stray match of the squad winning her match against Beatrice Crespo due to retirement at 6-5 in the first set. Playing right under her on the No. 2 flight was Doyle who contested against Siya Sawhney winning 6-2, 6-2. The overall score now stands at 4-0. Continuing competing in her first collegiate match, Gutierrez played on the No. 6 court against Hatala, winning 6-3, 6-2. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) capped off her match against Victoria Delgado winning 6-3, 6-3. King closed out the contest for Manhattanville bringing the one and only match to a set tiebreaker winning 7-6, 6-1. The result of this contest brings their overall record to 7-1 on the season.
