Women’s Tennis Off to Best Start Since 2004, Winning Seven Straight

New York, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University Women's tennis team competed at The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the second time this season against John Jay College tonight. They have made waves with their exceptional play thus far and continue to control the courts as this has been their best season start since 2004. The Valiants prevailed over John Jay 6-1, collecting their seventh straight win on the season.

Doubles play opened with the court lights beaming on and the sun setting just behind Arthur Ashe Stadium. This was the first time all season Manhattanville experienced cold temperatures during a match. Playing on the No. 3 flight and finishing first were newly paired duo for the second time, Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon). The couple were the only ones to defeat their opponents Anna Rosario and Flor Caro in straight games, 8-0. The dynamic duo of Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished next on the No. 2 court conquering their oppositions Rose Azzu and Manuela Orrego, 8-1. On the No. 1 Court was twin sister Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) who dropped a few more games than their teammates but still managed to win, 6-3 against Sarina Moi and Kayla Saintard. The Valiants lead 1-0 over the Bloodhounds with these wins.

Filippelli started off singles play strong for the Valiants on court No. 3 defeating Orrego in straight sets and games 6-0, 6-0. Following closely behind was Gutierrez with a carbon-copy final score, 6-0, 6-0, defeating Caro on the No. 6 flight. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) found herself on the second court competing against Saintard winning 6-2, 6-1. With only three more matches left, the Valiants now stood at an overall score of 4-0. Graduate captain King finished next on court No. 5. triumphing over Caraza 6-1, 6-0. Doyle finished next as she was no stranger to the No. 1 flight competing against Moi. Moi secured the one and only point for John Jay. The first set went to Moi winning 6-1 but Doyle came back to win the second set 6-3. The final tiebreaker ultimately went to Moi fastening their one and only point of the match. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) had the longest lasting match of the night going to a three-set thriller. Azzu won the first set on court No. 4, 6-4, while Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) fought back to win the second 6-2. The third and final tiebreaker set came out to Addison winning 10-3 and finalizing the score at 6-1.

Manhattanville Continues to persevere with this being their last out f conference match. From here on out, the Valiants look ahead to competing in only conference play left in the season.
