RYE, N.Y. - After being downed by the Red Dragons in the season opener, the Manhattanville University women's hockey team fell to Cortland, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon, closing out the first series of the 2024-25 slate. Manhattanville now resides with a 0-2-0 record.
Cortland controlled the pace of play in the first twenty minutes, producing blow after blow on the net, with Valiant netminder
Paz Hassan-Contreras (Lansing, Mich./Okemos) standing tall throughout the first period of play. As Hassan-Contreras stopped 15 shots in the first period, the Red Dragons found themselves on the power play after a roughing call, then gaining a two-person advantage after a high stick penalty. The Red Dragons capitalized on the man advantage, rippling the back of the net at 17:41 as Ainsley Delacourt got help from Drew Kopek and Kayla Persinger, giving the 1-0 lead to the opposition.
The Red Dragons would erupt in the second stanza, scoring four goals from four different skaters, Mia Hlasnick, Katie Mahoney, Kayla Persinger, and Fanny Aneborn to push the score to 5-0, giving Cortland a comfortable goal cushion. Cortland would continue to produce chances on net, firing 27 shots total in the second period, 15 of which were on the frame of the goal.
Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, Conn./Nonnewaug High School) came in relief of the sophomore netminder, saving her first four shots faced.
More of the same would unfold in the third period, as the Red Dragons were able to find the back of the net three more times, but not before the stick of
Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards) was able to net the Valiants a consolation goal, when she broke free of the backline and placed it behind the Red Dragon netminder. With that marker, the final score would show a Cortland victory, 8-1.
Chinetti would once again lead the Valiants in shots with five, as
Erin Flaherty (Rockland, Mass./Canterbury School) followed suit with two, paced by
Harper Weisbeck (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland),
Taylor Willoughby (Camrose, Alberta, Canada/John Maland),
Ali Joly (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton / Caledon Coyotes), and
Lulu LePage (Swansea, Mass./Elmira College) with one each.
In the crease, Hassan-Contreras totaled 22 saves before being substituted by Austin, who turned away twelve shots total.
It was dead-even in the faceoff circle, as both teams garnered 22 wins.
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) led the Valiants with eleven wins, rounded out by
Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School) and Joly with six and four, respectively.
Manhattanville would once again go 0-3 on the power play, taking three shots with the man advantage.
