Men’s Hockey Collects Point in Shootout Loss to Nazareth

RYE, N.Y. - Riding on their hot streak at Playland Ice Casino, the Manhattanville University men's hockey team was cooled off by their counterparts, as the Golden Flyers captured the two points in the shootout. The Valiants now sit at a mark of 3-2-1, as they hold the same record in UCHC play with ten points.

The Valiants struck first as people were still finding their seats, with Cameron Vassos (Caledon, Ontario/Navan Grads (CCHL)) finding himself with the puck in front of the net and slotting it past the opposing netminder after passes from Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School / Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) and Ryan McKenna (Spokane, Wash./Sheridan Hawks (NA3HL)) under thirty seconds into the game. No more action was to be had on the scoreboard, as the Golden Flyers outshot the Valiants, 13-9, in the opening period. Nazareth found themselves with a golden opportunity following a 5-minute major penalty, handicapping the Valiants for the remainder of the period.

Nazareth was able to convert with their power play unit as the second stanza opened with Logan Tobias corralling a loose puck and trickling it past the Valiant goaltender to even the score at one-apiece. In what proved to be a four-goal period on the ice for both squads, the Golden Flyers would strike from the twig of Will Halecki after being set up by Anthony Quinlivan, to have the Flyers mount a 2-1 lead 05:01 into the second period. Manhattanville would even things up just two minutes later from captain Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)), who fired a shot while falling to the ice, beating the goaltender as things resided at 2-2. In similar fashion, Nazareth answered just three minutes after the Valiant tying tally, with Cole Bauman collecting and putting home a rebound from a shot kicked away, giving the Golden Flyers a 3-2 lead as the contest headed into the final period in regulation.

Nicholas Rogers (Broad Channel, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)) and Artem Mateichenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/New Hampshire Avalanche (EHL)) would combine to even things up once again 01:21 into the third period, as Rodgers used his southpaw stance to fire it into the netting for the 3-3 tie. Manhattanville took control of the contest in the offensive department unleashing nine shots compared to the visitor's three, but Matt Sayles stood tall and forced the contest into an overtime period.

In the extra period, more of the same unfolded on the ice, as neither team could find the definitive marker, with both squads only registering two shots in 3-on-3 action, forcing the contest into a Best-of-three shootout.

Bauman would be the lone skater to sink his attempt, as all three Valiants were stymied by Sayles, seeing the Golden Flyers take two points on the day.

William Billequey (Montreal, Quebec/Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) got the nod for the second-straight game in net for the Valiants, producing 28 saves in the 65:00 spent between the pipes.

It was near even in the faceoff department, as the Valiants edged out the Golden Flyers, 33-32. Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) led with eleven wins, followed by McKenna with nine and Caden Eaton (Indian River, Mich./Cornwall Colts (CCHL)) with six.

The power play unit for the Valiants was not nearly as effective in the contest compared to the previous night, as they went 0-2 with four shots. Nazareth turned in a 1-5 performance with eight shots total.
