PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Manhattanville University women's hockey capped off a pair of weekend victories against Chatham University on Saturday, scoring five unanswered goals. Four different Valiants scored with a breakout third period to complete the comeback. With this win, the Valiants now stand at 2-4-0 overall while Chatham stands at 0-6-1.
The Cougars struck first having the one and only goal of the first period. Rainey Jessup scored at the 15:57 mark at even strength to put Chatham ahead 1-0. Both squads were neck and neck with shots throughout the first twenty minutes. The Valiants outshot the Cougars by one, 8-7. The score remained 1-0 by the end of the first period.
Chatham would continue to test Valiant goaltender Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, Conn./Nonnewaug High School), extending their lead shortly into the second period at the 16:01 mark. Sophia Taylor shot the puck past Austin to make the score 2-0. Manhattanville quickly responded, scoring 59 seconds later with a goal from Molly Sances (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial), her first of the season. The score stood at 2-1 to close out the second period.
The Valiants came out strong on the offensive end scoring four more goals in the final period of play. Colby Cantor (Norwell, Mass./North American Hockey Academy) scored her first of the season at 2:15 into the period. The score was now level at 2-2. About thirteen minutes would go on with no goals scored. The final three goals came one after the other firing past Cougars goaltender Sam Brophy. Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) scored at the 15:56 mark putting Manhattanville ahead, 3-2. Aly Joly extended the lead scoring the final two goals for the Valiants. The fourth goal came just about a minute later while the fifth and final goal came as an empty netter at the 18:26 mark. Manhattanville led the charge in shots with 16 in the final period compared to Chatham's three.
Joly capped off the game with two goals while three other Valiants each had one.
Katherine Stahl (Middletown, R.I./Middletown), Lulu LePage (Swansea, Mass./Elmira College) and Grace Genest (Wake Forest, N.C./The Gunnery (Conn.)) each tallied two assists. Niedermier, Sances and Cantor each recorded one.
Niedermier controlled the faceoff circle like she has been all season. With 26 wins she led the charge in the circles while Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School) followed behind with six.
Austin tallied fourteen more saves under her belt tonight, collecting 27 total for the weekend.
