BOSTON, Mass. – Harper Weisbeck (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) scored her first two goals of the season while
Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards) matched the team lead with her third of the year but the Manhattanville University women's hockey team was unable to come back from a three-goal deficit against hosting UMass Boston in Saturday's opening round of the 2024 Codfish Bowl. The loss drops Manhattanville to 2-5-0 overall and sends the Valiants into the Codfish Bowl consolation game on Sunday afternoon to close out the weekend.
Manhattanville outshot the Beacons 32-25, but UMass Boston made the most of their opportunities inside the Valiant defensive zone, scoring on two of the seven shots on net they registered in the opening period. The Beacons got on the board 9:38 into the contest as Lily Hayes scored her second of the season from Rae Alexander and Avery Brooks.
Chinetti brought the Valiants even after collecting a loose puck following a Beacon shot in the neutral zone. The junior weaved her way through traffic to find herself one-on-one against the lone trailing defender. Chinetti dragged the puck to the far circle and fired a wrister to the far side of the net to tie things up at 1-1 at the 11:32 mark. The Beacons retook the lead five minutes later off Emily Hansen's third goal of the year from Adriana Crepaldi. The Valiants were held without a shot attempt over the remainder of the period, spending two minutes on the penalty kill, sending the teams to the locker rooms with the home side nursing the one goal advantage.
It would take 12 and a half minutes after intermission to see any further scoring, but the Beacons were able to break things open with a pair of tallies in a 16 second span. Crepaldi set up another scoring chance for UMass Boston, poking a loose puck off the boards to find the stick of a streaking Liz Kramp who sped past Manhattanville's defenders to find the twine. The Beacons followed up by winning the ensuing faceoff and greeted
Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J.) rudely, with the freshman goalie being beat on Avery Brooks' shot from the point on the first attempt she saw on the game fresh off a Valiant goalie change.
Brooks' tally went on to serve as the eventual game-winner as Manhattanville was able to get two more goals before all was said and done. Manhattanville brought an end to the Beacons' goal streak with 3:01 left in the second. UMass went shorthanded following a tripping call to send the Valiants on their third power play of the afternoon. The Beacon defensive unit did not give up many open looks, with Margeaux Butters blocking three Valiant shots in a 47 second span. The numbers game eventually broke down a tired UMass defensive unit as Weisbeck received a cross ice pass from
Ali Joly (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton / Caledon Coyotes) and fired in a backhander past Veronika Hadamovsky to cut the deficit down to a pair heading into the third.
Another quiet start to a period saw close to 17 scoreless minutes as time continued to work against the Valiants. Manhattanville logged a game-low six shots in the third as the Beacons did a stellar job shutting down the Valiants' offensive chances. UMass would net an insurance tally with 3:03 left in regulation with Hayes netting her second of the day by way of Brooks and Melina Maggio. Manhattanville got one back with 26 seconds left to play with the net empty to once again strike with a numbers advantage.
Danika Aubin (Guy, Alberta, Canada/Northern Alberta Xtreme (CSSHL)) fired in a wrister from the blue line towards the crease where
Katherine Stahl (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) and Weisbeck were setting up shop. A quick tip from Stahl to Weisbeck set up the sophomore for her second of the day.
Manhattanville won the following faceoff but were unable to pull off any further magic as
Erin Flaherty (Rockland, Mass./Canterbury School) recorded the team's final shot of the afternoon, going wide as the Beacons drained the remainder of the clock out.
Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, Conn./Nonnewaug High School) made the start, allowing three goals in her 32:33 minutes in the crease for the Valiants with ten saves. Cimorelli was saddled with the loss, allowing the two tallies in 25:43 of ice time with ten stops of her own.
UMass Boston narrowly won the faceoff battle, 24-23.
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) led the Valiants' draw effort with 16 wins, pacing all skaters on both teams.
The Valiants went 1-for-5 on the power play, logging 12 total shots with the extra skaters. The Beacons finished 0-for-3 with six shots on their power play chances.
