MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Closing out Spring Break action, the Manhattanville College baseball team will carry a three-game winning streak back home as the Valiants defeated King's 9-5 on Sunday. Manhattanville concludes The Ripken Experience with a 3-1 overall record to start 2024.
After being limited to a lone run in their season opener against Johnson & Wales on Thursday, the Valiant bats were hot down south with 32 total runs as part of the winning streak. Manhattanville scored their nine runs on 10 hits and a pair of Monarch errors in Sunday's victory.
It was a quick start at the plate for Manhattanville, scoring six runs across the opening four innings. After
Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) tossed a perfect top of the first, the Valiants capitalized on a pair of defensive miscues and a pair of base knocks in the bottom half.
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) reached on a fielding error to begin the Valiants' first trips to the plate and would run around the bases as
Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) laced a triple to right field for the game's first run. Tashik scored two batters later on a
Mike Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) sacrifice fly.
Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) then drew a two out walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Monarch catcher to prolong the inning. The Valiants added their third unearned run of the inning as Musantry scored on
Christian Amoruso's (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) single to take an early 3-0 lead.
After being held in check in the second, Manhattanville added two more runs in the third on a
Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) double that plated
Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and Amoruso. It was another extra base hit in the fourth that put the Valiants up 6-0 as Tashik continued his stellar start to the season with a double to score Parisi. Of the sophomore's seven hits to begin the season, five have gone for extra bases.
With the early run support, Costa cruised through the first five innings on the mound, allowing just two base hits. The freshman would find himself in trouble in the sixth after allowing a single and double to begin the frame, spelling an end to his first collegiate appearance. The two runners would eventually score in the inning, with Costa's final line reading two runs allowed on four hits and a walk in five-plus innings of work, striking out a pair as he was credited with the win.
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) was tasked with going the distance for the Valiants out of the pen to preserve the win. After allowing a single to the first batter he faced that allowed the Monarchs to plate the pair of runs, the reliever struck out two and got an inning-ended flyout to keep the Valiants up 6-2.
Manhattanville responded right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half to reclaim their six-run lead. Goohs led off the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, scoring on a
CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) single. Archul put himself in scoring position after stealing second two batters later and plated the eighth run as Tashik delivered another RBI hit.
King's got the two runs back once again an inning later off RBI from Jacob Sutton and Chase Yochem to make it an 8-4 game. The Valiants added one final insurance tally in the seventh in a far from conventional manner. After Musantry led off with a triple, Amoruso, Archul and Parisi were all hit by pitches to bring home another run.
King's added one final run off a Zach Day double in the ninth, but that would be all the Monarchs would muster to close out the contest.
In his first Manhattanville appearance, Osso scattered six hits across four innings, allowing three runs and issuing three walks while striking out six.
