Men's Lacrosse Holds Off New Paltz to Get Back Into Win Column

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Another contest that came down to the wire, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team put an end to a three-game skid on Saturday afternoon with a 16-14 win at New Paltz. The Valiants are back over .500 with the win, sitting at 4-3 overall on the year.

The hosting Hawks scored the opening tally 2:03 into the game as Ethan Scully recorded his 11th of the year. Manhattanville got the next two as Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) assisted a pair of Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) tallies to give the Valiants their first lead of the day. The first tally came a man-up following a slashing penalty charged to the Hawks before Cornelia put the Valiants ahead even-strength with 5:47 left in the opening quarter. New Paltz retook the lead before the quarter concluded as James Flanagan and Thomas Armetta stuck for the home team to lead 3-2.

After his pair of first quarter assists, Swift continued to build on a strong offensive day as he notched back-to-back tallies to begin the second. His first would be set up by Cornelia, while Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) earned the assist on his second. Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) then scored his sixth of the season from Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) to give the Valiants a 5-3 advantage 3:38 into the second quarter.

The Hawks pulled even after Ryan Scully and Flanagan scored 26 seconds apart with 9:53 and 9:27 left in the half. Manhattanville followed up with the next three goals to pull back ahead. Opening up the run was the Tallerico-to-Swift connection striking again before Larkin netted a man-up tally from Cornelia and a Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) unassisted goal to put the Valiants up by three with less than five minutes remaining in the half. John Reese and Colin Cleary brought New Paltz back within one before Larkin's second of the quarter with 89 seconds left in the half put Manhattanville up by two again. The Hawks had one last trick up their sleeves as Anthony Senecal let a shot rip at the horn that beat Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) in net to make the Hawks' halftime deficit a single goal, 9-8.

The teams traded the four goals over the third period, with Scully evening things up at 9-9 2:41 into the third. Swift struck again to reestablish the Valiants' advantage with 8:19 left in the quarter. The score held at 10-9 in favor of the Valiants until the final minute of the third, when Senecal tied the game once again at 10-10 with 58 seconds left. The Valiants had some closing seconds magic of their own as Cornelia scored his third of the game and 30th of the season with 39 seconds left on the clock, sending the game to the fourth with Manhattanville nursing an 11-10 lead.

Reese knotted the game up at 11-11 with 2:46 gone in the fourth, the first of nine total goals over the closing 15 minutes. Senecal gave the Hawks their first lead since the first quarter with 6:51 left to play, but it was short lived as Palladino scored the equalizer from Swift 32 second later. Cornelia put the Valiants back in front with 5:49 on the clock off an assist from Larkin, who would add a crucial insurance tally himself with 3:47 left in regulation. A frenzied final three minutes started with Senecal pulling the Hawks back within a goal after scoring from Sully. Larkin delivered another clutch goal to reestablish the two-score lead with 1:19 left on the clock. The Hawks continued to fire away as Reese scored his third of the day with 33 seconds remaining, but Swift slammed the door on any final comeback attempt by netting his fifth with 10 seconds to go, securing the 16-14 Valiant win.

Ulzheimer made 16 saves to secure the win, his fourth of the season. The sophomore goalkeeper sports a 13.20 goals-against average with 89 saves on the year.

Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) finished as the team's defensive leader with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Chris Perrone (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) also caused a pair of Hawks turnovers, while Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) collected four ground balls along with his five faceoff wins. Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) won seven faceoffs for the Vals.
