Men's Lacrosse Toppled By Kean

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team was shut down by visiting Kean on Wednesday night, falling by a final of 28-3 to the Cougars. The Valiants drop back down to .500 with the loss, sitting at 4-4 overall.

The loss was the most lopsided defeat the Valiants have suffered since 1999 in a 27-0 loss to Neumann.

The Cougars made a statement early by scoring six times across the opening 11:16. Manhattanville was able to regain composure and control the final four and a half minute of the quarter, starting with Batt Bundy scoring his third of the year with an unassisted tally with 4:25 remaining. Christian Schlaefer recorded Kean's seventh goal of the quarter with 3:40 left, but the Valiants scored twice in the closing minute. First, Nick Corace (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) recorded his third goal of the year from Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) with 12 seconds left on the clock before Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) netted his 13th of the season by way of Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) nine second later to cut Manhattanville's deficit down to 7-3.

Despite the Valiants building some momentum in the tailend of the first, Kean was dominant for the ensuing 45 minutes as they held Manhattanville scoreless while scoring 21 unanswered goals to close out the contest. Nick Thorne erupted for an eight point performance, scoring seven times to lead the Cougar offense.

The Valiants were outshot 68-24. Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and Cornelia were able to generate the most offensive looks with five shots apiece, each putting three on net.

Mike Mooney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) had a team-high five ground balls for the Valiant defensive unit, followed by three each from the Manhattanville faceoff specialists Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) and Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). The duo won 14 total faceoffs, with Goldstein leading the way with eight.

Mooney also had a team-leading two caused turnovers, with Palladino, Elijah Bell (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), Tim Beahm (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Dennis Thomas (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) each adding one.

The Valiants used three goalkeepers in the loss. Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) played the first half, making eight saves while allowing 17 goals. Bell and Mike Hopkins (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) split duties over the closing 30 minutes, with Bell making three saves and allowing eight goals in 17:03 while Hopkins made a pair of stops with three goals allowed in his 12:57 on the field.
