Wentworth Second Half Surge Downs Men's Lacrosse

BOSTON, MASS. – An eight-goal run by the Leopards was too much for the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team to battle back from on a rain-soaked Saturday night as the Valiants were felled by the Wentworth Institute of Technology, 13-4. The Valiants fall back below .500 with the loss at 4-5 overall.

Manhattanville held tight with the Leopards (7-2) through the opening 24 minutes. WIT scored first six minutes in, capitalizing on a Manhattanville penalty as Drew Bouley scored a man-up from Tyler Longo. The Valiants pulled even with 4:49 left in the quarter off Nick Cornelia's (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) 32nd goal of the year, assisted by Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh). Wentworth was able to retake the lead with goals by Brendan Kroll and Kobi Buffa to close out the quarter up 3-1.

Scoring was nowhere to be found through the first eight minutes of the second before Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) finally broke through as Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) collected an assist on the grad student's 19th tally of the year. Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) followed up with his seventh of the season 37 seconds later to tie things up at 3-3. After holding Wentworth scoreless for close to 15 minutes, Kroll put WIT back ahead with 3:25 left in the half while Longo put the home team up by two at halftime with his second of the night with 15 seconds left in the quarter.

The late surge by the Leopards to close out the half carried over into the second as the Leopards scored the first six goals of the third quarter. After 10 minutes of play in the period, WIT had erupted out to an 11-3 lead. Swift brought an end to the run with his second of the game, but that would be the lone goal Manhattanville scored over the closing 30 minutes. WIT added two more tallied in the fourth to pick up the 13-4 win.

Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) played the full 60 minutes in net for Manhattanville as he posted 18 saves. The sophomore goalie has made 10 or more stops in six of his nine appearances this year.

Wentworth dominated possession as the team fired 55 shots to the Valiants' 17. Swift fired a team-high nine shot attempts, with six going on target, while all three of Cornelia's shots were on net. Tallerico also finished second alongside Cornelia with three total shots on the night.

Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) was the leading playmaker in the defensive end with three caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Ulzheimer scooped five grounders while in the cage, while Mike Mooney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) totaled four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Cornelia also forced a pair of takeaways while adding three ground balls.

WIT won the faceoff battle by a margin of 15 to 6. Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was the Vals' most successful drawman on the night with five victories.
