Men’s Volleyball Falls Twice at Manhattanville Tri-Match

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's volleyball team was bested in both end of their tri-match hosted in Kennedy Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Valiants were defeated by the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins and Ramapo Roadrunners in three set affairs. The pair of the losses moves Manhattanville's record to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in Skyline Conference play.

Match One Recap: Manhattanville 0, Mount Saint Vincent 3 (20-25, 15-25, 25-27)

After a successful two-match week with a pair of sweeps, the Valiants were unable to take a set from Mount Saint Vincent to open tri-match play.

Wilton Martinez (Bronx, N.Y./Celia Cruz Bronx HS of Music) posted 10 kills as Manhattanville's top attacker, as Idris Idris (Kassala, Sudan/JFK High School) recorded a team-high 18 assists.  Emil Morban Medrano (San Cristobal, Republica Dominicana/HS for Environmental Studies) was the Valiants' defensive leader, racking up 11 digs.

The Dolphins would open the first set on a 5-2 scoring run before the Valiants would claw their way back to tie it up at 5-5. As Mount Saint Vincent continued to find success offensively and take from the mistakes made by Manhattanville, they would hold the lead through the set. The Valiants would pull within two on multiple occasions, but it would not be enough. The Dolphins went on a 9-5 run to close out the first set and win 25-20.

It would be a sluggish start for Manhattanville in the second set as Mount Saint Vincent took the first three points. It would be a back-and-forth battle from then on as it went stride for stride.

The Valiants tried to chip away at the deficit, eventually the Dolphins would capitalize on their lead going up by as much as nine and taking the set by 10, with a score of 25-15. Everyone would have a hand in the game for Mount Saint Vincent as they hit a match-high 0.31 with 13 kills total.

The third set would prove to be the Valiants best play of the day thus far, holding a 7-5 lead to get started. The Dolphins showed resilence stringing some points together to tie it up, 10-10 then went on a huge 10-2 run. Manhattanville responded with a run of their own, going 12-4 with crazy 24-24 finish. Back-to-back service errors would leave it at 25-25 before Mount Saint Vincent would take the next pair of points for the win. This would be their fourth conference win of the season.

Match Two Recap: Manhattanville 0, Ramapo 3 (21-25, 20-25, 20-25)

The Valiants were able to piece together points but struggled to keep up with the Roadrunners' .341 hitting percentage in the match as Ramapo took the finale of Saturday's action in a three-set sweep.

Pedro Barros Machado (Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil/Colegio Oficina) and Medrano led Manhattanville's attack effort with seven kills each, while Martinez finished with six. Idris collected 16 assists and a team-high seven digs. Gandarillas also dug out five balls.

With the Valiants leading 9-7 in the first set, the Roadrunners would go on an 11-5 scoring run taking a four-point lead on the shoulders of Nick Lisi. After three straight kills between Fletcher and Medrano, Manhattanville would come back within one, 18-17. It would then be a back-and-forth effort as both teams were rallying successfully and the Valiants would find themselves with three more points to take the lead. Ramapo would claim the first set after a five-point scoring run to close it out, 25-21.

It would be a team-high 15 kills in the middle frame for the Roadrunners as the Valiants continued to fight their way back, tying it up on six separate occasions to begin the set. Ramapo improved on their attack making a 7-2 scoring run, leading 13-8 before three unanswered points from Manhattanville brought them back within two. The teams would then go point for point before a Machado kill closed the gap for the Valiants would come within one. The Roadrunners dominated to piece together a 7-3 run to take the set, 25-20.

As was the case with the previous two sets, the teams found themselves tied 11-11 with a pivotal four-point run for Ramapo. This was followed by three more points down the line for the Roadrunners to take a five-point lead. The Valiants came up with some unanswered points of their own, narrowing the gap but the Roadrunners rattled off the final two points to secure the win, 25-20.

The Valiants will hit the road and take on Yeshiva University on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
