Men's Volleyball Drops Three-Setter to No. 14 Hobart

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's volleyball team was bested by 14th-ranked Hobart on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Statesmen in three sets. The loss marks an end to the Valiants' non-conference slate for the regular season as they will carry a 9-14 overall record into the final two weeks of the year.

The Valiants were limited to 15 total kills in the match, matching their single-match season-low. Joe Gandarillas (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem HS East) led Manhattanville's attack effort with five of the team's kills, while Wilton Matinez and Emil Morban Medrano (San Cristobal, Republica Dominicana/HS for Environmental Studies) both finished with three. The trio each added an ace on their serving efforts.

Martinez and Medrano also led the defensive side with four digs each. Medrano logged the team's lone solo block, while Pedro Barros Machado (Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil/Colegio Oficina) and Jacob Fletcher (Rocklin, Calif./Western Sierra Collegiate Academy) combined for an assisted block.

Machado had a team-high eight assists in the effort, while Idris Idris (Kassala, Sudan/JFK High School) added four. Gandarillas and Medrano both finished with one helper.

The Statesmen hit .529 in the opening set, quickly jumping out to a 5-1 lead. While the Valiants posted a respectable .308 hitting percentage of their own in the frame, the team was limited to just five kills in the set. After Manhattanville fought back to a two-point deficit, down 8-6, Hobart went on a7-1 run to pull firmly ahead. The Valiants scored only four points while controlling the serve over the duration of the set, while a 5-0 Statesmen run put Hobart up 21-10. After trading points, Manhattanville had a set-high three-point run to move the score to 22-14, but Hobart scored three of the next four to take the opening frame, 25-15.

Neither team was able to replicate their match-best hitting percentage from the opening set, but the Statesmen used a number of short two- and three-point runs to climb their way up to set point. After two early ties, Hobart took a 5-3 lead that they never surrendered. The Valiants kept within one before Hobart scored six of seven to pull out to a 12-6 advantage. Manhattanville's longest run would once again be three points, as a Martinez and Gandarillas kill sandwiched a Hobart ball handling error, but it only made a slight dent in the lead to cut it to 21-14 as the Statesmen score four of the final five with a 25-15 win.

Manhattanville hit a match-low .063 in the third set, logging three kills to two errors. Despite the lack of putaways, the Vals kept pace with Hobart for much of the set. The teams traded 15 different tied scores as they matched each other blow for blow to a 15-15 tie. The Statesmen were able to finally put the Valiants away with an 8-1 run to knock on the door of match point with a 23-16 lead. The Valiants collected two final points of Hobart service errors, but kills by Daniel Sappia and Nathan Deller brought an end to the day with a 25-18 win for the Statesmen.
