PURCHASE, N.Y. – Seeing their first Division III opponent of the spring, the Manhattanville College men's tennis team defeated John Jay on Tuesday afternoon 8-1. The Valiants record their first win of the season with the result, climbing to 1-2 overall.
Manhattanville got off to a hot start with wins in all three doubles flights. The Valiants notched 8-0 sweeps in the No. 2 and No. 3 showdowns, with the pairing of
Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) and
Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) besting Samir Ghimire and AJ Esperanza, while
Carter Hunter-Crump (Denver, Colo./Centaurus) and
Griffin Forberg (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) pitched the shutout over Massimo Leandri and Nathaniel Barnaby. The top flight was a closer battle, but
James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and
Weston Goodwin (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) emerged victorious for the Valiants over Nikia Sadounichy and Deondre Mckenzie, 8-4.
The Valiants logged four 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles action to take the match. In the first contest to wrap, Hunter-Crump blanked Barnaby in the No. 6 showing. Forberg then completed his sweep over Esperanza on Court 4 ahead of Guzman besting Leandri in the No. 5s. Goodwin was the final beneficiary of a shutout win, taking care of business against Mckenize in the No. 2 matchup. Loganadan earned the Valiants' final point with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ghimire in No. 3 action. The Bloodhounds were able to grab a point in the top flight as Sadounichy bested Hourihan 3-6, 1-6.
