Softball Sweeps Albertus Magnus in Wednesday Matinee

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Manhattanville College softball team continued their heavy road schedule to begin the season as they secured a pair of run-rule victories against the Albertus Magnus Falcons on Wednesday. With the wins, the Valiants improved to 3-7 on the young season.

Junior infielder Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) had herself a day as she recorded five runs on five hits and three runs batted in between the pair of games. Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) would also dominate with four runs on three hits and six runs batted in, collecting her first home run of the season.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 8, Albertus Magnus 0 (Six Innings)

It would be a quick start for the Valiants, scoring their first run in the top of the first. In total, Manhattanville plated eight runs on 14 hits to secure the win.

Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) opened up the day scoring with an RBI single to plate Walsh. In the second inning, Olvia Fasce would reach on an error as Samatha Reyer would advance to third and then score on the throw to take a 2-0 lead. The third inning would be sold as both teams would be held scoreless.

Walsh got another on the board as she had an RBI single to begin the fourth inning. Harker would then reach on an error as Walsh made her way around the bases to score. Amaya Esparza (San Diego, Calif./Granite Hills) followed up with an RBI double to take a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.

In the fifth, Fasce recorded another single with a pair of runs coming in from Cady Sickler (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) to go up, 7-0. To cap off the matinee, Jori Wilkendorf (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) had a sacrifice fly to bring Esparza home to tally the eighth run of the game and secure the victory.

Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) went a full six innings, earning her first win of the season. She would only give up a pair of hits while striking out nine on 20 at-bats.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 18, Albertus Magnus 6 (Five Innings)

The Valiants completed the sweep with 18 runs on 10 hits in the finale of the doubleheader.

It was another quick start for Manhattanville as the team plated four in the first inning, as Harker launched a two-run homer followed by a two RBI triple from Lazur. The Falcons would respond with five of their own in the bottom of the first to take a one run lead.

In the second, the Valiants plated three more runs on two hits to take back the lead. Harker scored Walsh and Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) with a double while Esparza brought Harker home. The third inning would result in a pair of doubles from Wilkendorf and Reyer to take a 9-5 lead.

Albertus Magnus wouldn't be able to find momentum through the middle frames as Manhattanville continued to dominate, showcasing their most success in the top of the fourth. It would be eight runs on five hits as another pair of RBI doubles would come from Esparza and Coleman as Lazur and Sickler each tallied an RBI single. A bases loaded walk brought home another run before Walsh contributed an RBI single, Harker a sacrifice fly, and Victoria Barron (South Gate, Calif./Warren) an RBI off a fielder's choice.

The game would conclude in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice from the Falcons' Jazmyn Browne as Wilkendorf retired the side for the Valiants in order to enact the run rule. She would earn her first win of her collegiate career going 4.1 innings with one run on five hits and striking out one.

The Valiants continue their road slate as they take on Stevens on Saturday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
